On exceeding expectations of teachers. I just couldn't be bothered learning my French irregular verbs. And so every week when we had a test I tried to cheat using my Letts Schoolboy Diary - which had them all listed in the back. But that never worked and I always only got 2 or 3 out of 10. I really wasn't very good at French grammar - and my teacher (Sweaty Betty) told me after I'd got a poor E in my O-Level Prelim that I'd no chance of passing my O-Level. Hah! I could speak it well, and I swotted hard on my grammar - and got an A.
