Hi guys,

Lets face it, the game of golf that we all love can be expensive at times, particularly for me as a student and only working part time. I often find it difficult to find time to fit in a round of golf, and usually opt for the range once or twice a week.

I often read no end of posts on here, where by people talk about there TM driver, or there new Callaway Irons, and im just wondering, how do you guys afford it!? I also often read about how often you manage to play golf, and it seems a lot of you play during the week! What sort of jobs do you all have, where by you can afford the nice gear, and still have time to play regularly!?

Just to fill you in as to my position, im a full time student, currently studying for a degree in Product Design, and I would one day, love to be designing the clubs that you all use at your local club!

Thanks.

a lot of the people you see playing lots midweek all play with their new ping clubs. ergo, they are retired! ;-)

I'm a Project Manager by profession and due to this I generally don't get to play midweek during the day. This is also how I afford new equipment although I tend not to buy much these days.
Once you get through your degree and get out in the working world you will find yourself much in the same place and many on here.

I found this place having read a few mags! I had visions of 18+ males sitting on here, and a few talented youngsters!

There are a couple of talented young guns here, look out for a lad named Smiffy, he is up and coming and destined for big things!

Once I have my degree, I hope that I can have a career in the design industry! It would be great to work at the Oven, (Nike Golf's design and research facility!)

i play mainly weekends and only change clubs rarely.

i also still struggle to comprehend the new sets that some can afford!

like a set of mp59s with some matt KBS stiff shafts and some nice tidy grips would set you back some serious serious cash.

id love to be given them but cant imagine ever having the dollar to buy a full set new!

I agree mate, although looking at the gear you have, your hooked up with some serious stuff! I just play with what I can afford!

if its your main or only hobby then its relatively speaking not that expensive to change irons every 4-5 years and occasional driver and putters.
Try skiing/autosports/diving/sailing etc etc for cash hungry sports, Golf can be done as cheaply or as expensively as you want or can afford, its a great leveller.

I suppose you guys would say the same if you saw my collection of equipment related to my degree course! I probably have within excess of 100 marker pens, all that retail at about £5 each, and then theres my collection of craft tools that I use for my models, so I suppose its the same as you guys spending your money on golf clubs!

Well said. I gave up golf when I went to college, even though I worked part time all through my degree and post-grad I could never afford to keep up golf either money or time-wise. Came back to it about 2 years ago and got serious last year, bought new irons and driver and thats me done for a while Ill wager. My 5 wood, putter, wedges, bag, all came from ebay averaging about £35 each. As Darth said, it doesnt have to be mega-expensive kit-wise, but granted membership is a big hit if you're on student wages. Best of luck with the studies and the golf, when you get a job you'll be on here telling us about your lovely new shineys. Happy days.

A lot of us work very hard in order to be able to afford the clubs we play with. I am only a youngster here at 25 yrs old, but I have worked in London for the past 8 years and have only recently found a job that pays we well enough to support my habit.

You will find that when you finish your degree, you will earn proper money and be able to afford the stuff you want. But as most of us (except RickG) have to save for it first.

Rob,

Once you graduate and get a job. Buy all the golf kit u can afford. If you think its tough now, wait till the days when you have mortgage payments and wee mouths to feed.

My tactic is to sell as much crap on ebay, build up my Paypal account then trawl the t'internet for bargains (usually 2nd hand) Or rely on my missus buying me some golf kit for birthday or xmas

e.g. Santa got me a PK twinline ( 2nd hand from Scott Brown on here....cheers Scott - it was a belter !!)

If money's tight, don't buy anything new. As others have said, ebay can be a good place to pick things up, and most decent pro shops will have a 2nd hand rack where you can find decent gear for a fraction of the price new. I traded up my irons at the start of this year for a set of nearly-mint replacements for about half the cost new.

I am a (31 year old) Marketing Manager, work 8:30 till 17:00 and my course is on the way home - I can get there for about 17:40 and squeeze in 9-18 holes during the week without too much hassle. In fact, the only hassle I really get is from HID about the time I spend playing, but generally she will work late once a week and always works Saturdays so I get that as my golfing time!

As for buying things, my main problem is buying golf clothes, can't seem to help myself!

Self employed! You arrange your own diary, so if the weather is naff you work your nuts off to afford the new sticks and membership, when the weather is nice you don't work so hard, finish early and shoot down the club for 9 holes, obviously this has other draw backs like not earning enough money to buy a round of drinks that weekend but on a whole it works for me.

My business is very far from making me a wealthy person, it just about pays the bills and keeps me a club golfer, I still have to save for treats be it golf related or holidays. My recent purchase of Amp irons, hybrid, 3 wood and driver took me about a year to save up for. The main benefit for me about being self employed is that I have a flexible diary, or rather more flexible than if I were to work for someone. I like keeping the odd afternoon free for spending time with my two boys and when I have had enough of them, then I go down to the club.

I work in the NHS so hardly a well paid job. I'm at the top of my pay band and so no more annual increments and with payrises frozen for the foreseeable I'm stuck on the salary I'm on. That said HID works as well and we've no kids so any disposable income after the bills are paid can go towards my golf. I'm a magpie for clothes (shoes in particular) and have loads of shirts and jumpers. Mind you as we're allowed to dress smart/casual these do tend to get a lot of wear anyway as it saves getting changed when I get to the club or range after work
