Yet another Handicap Question

I've just played in a 2nd Division Open at another club this morning. Shot one over my handicap which is also one over SSS (70).

About a quarter of the scores were in and they were horrendous. Net high 70s and quite a few 80+s.

The two best scores in, so far, were net 70s (par). The CSS could be anything today from those scores - particularly as it is just a 2nd Division Open there and no Category 1 players taking part at all.

I could buffer, be up 0.1 or cut a couple of 0.2s based on what's in so far.

Now, I've got a comp at my place tomorrow, so what on earth do I do?

Henry - As far as I know, you work off your known H/C at any point.......so if it hasnt been adjusted at your Club from the results sent across, you work on todays H/C . I think !

With regard to tomorrow - nothing.
You haven't beaten SSS so until they post the scores your handicap doesn't change. If they post the scores before you go out tomorrow then any chan ge should take effect. If you'd shot, say, 1 below SSS then you should cut yourself the appropriate amount. If in the meantime CSS moves and you end up not getting cut then at least you've covered yourself. Better to play off a lower handicap than a higher one and get DQ'd.

I think.........

That's definitely wrong, Chris. I know the responsibility is yours to cut yourself, if appropriate.

For example, you could shoot the lights out in an away competition and be due a cut of a shot or two and it could take them weeks or even months to get it across to your club. If you hadn't cut yourself, you'd be playing off an incorrect handicap all that time which would be unfair.

If I'd shot under SSS, I'd definitely cut myself the appropriate amount.

This is where I don't like CSS. It's ok at your home club where you can access it pretty quickly but, for Opens, you could be up or down and not know.

I think I'll leave it as I'd need a cut of 0.4 to get down to 11 and it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that shooting one over your handicap and SSS would mean that you wouldn't lose two shots.

A bit of a tricky one!

Were they on holes that you get a shot on?
If they're nett trebles then you're for the chop I suspect....

One was and one wasn't. Just to complicate matters even further. By my reckoning, I've actually played to my handicap as far as handicap purposes go?

If your club uses howdidido software, swipe your card before you tee off and whatever your handicap is then that's what you play off. As far as i'm aware you cannot manually adjust your h'cap only the h'cap sec can adjust your allowance.

We don't actually swipe in at our place. For home competitions, the results are up on the board the next morning with any adjustments.

Away competitions (and this is one) are a different matter.

Thats the rub - how will you know the full results and correct CSS from an away comp by the time you tee off in the morning ?

:D

Hat's off to them. The results for the 1st Division at Beverley and 2nd Division at Hull are all up on HDID already.

Good work from all concerned there to get it all done and uploaded.

CSS was 70 which is rather surprising that only 8 out of 132 bettered their handicap and only 4 matched theirs.

I'll never work out CSS.

So, it doesn't look like there's any kind of cut. :(

css is worked from all players that are +2 over sss or better so par has got naff all to do with it i'm afraid.

Aaah, that makes more sense.

Well, at least it explains why the CSS was 70.

Not sure it actually makes much sense in arriving at a fair CSS.

In this case SSS was the same as par.

Just curious that only 18 out of 132 were within 2 shots of SSS and that they set the CSS and the 114 didn't! :D
