So it's time Santa started some shopping and either an Xbox or PS is on this years "list".

Looking for some pros and cons of each.

Am I right in saying that you need to pay a yearly subscription to play/use the Xbox online?

I imagine whatever I get the first game will be Rory's golf game. :D

A complete games console novice unless you count my old ps2 which didn't have any online connections.

Ta.

It's difficult to recommend outright, they're both good and ultimately very similar. You have to pay for the online game services on both Xbox and PlayStation now. Xbox Live is a better gaming service than PlayStation Plus, however, Sony tends to offer a better selection of free games each month as part of their subscription.

The choice really depends what games you want to play. And if you're wanting to play online, just buy what the majority of your buddies have.

If you're mainly wanting to play the Fifa/Rory type of multi-platform games then the PS4 is the better console.

Whatever you do, don't buy in the next few weeks. The PS4 has just dropped in price in the States and we'll likely see similar here shortly and the Xbox One is sure to follow ahead of Christmas.

This is a long article but does cover everything. http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/ps4-vs-xbox-720-which-is-better-1127315/1

Microsoft own Minecraft now, so whilst it's not an issue right now the future of Minecraft will be better with Xbox One.

I have both and use the PS4 more though the Xbox is better if online gaming is your thing. Overall though really nothing in them. Just don't buy Rory Mcilroy golf it is Hal a game at best and has few of the features of even the worst Tiger Woods games. Leave the golf until next years version.

I would recommend Mad Max, Metal Gear Solid 5 and buy PES16 over FIFA if you want football

To be honest my favourite games were always the TW series but was more of a Championship Manager guy. But since marriage, kids and a proper job time constraints stopped all of that.

Never was a fan of the footie games. Probably as I was rubbish lol

Extra storage is only really important if you're going to buy and download a lot of games digitally. If you're buying them in a shop on a disc it doesn't matter so much.

A 500GB hard drive will give you enough space to keep 10 - 20 games on it, very roughly. It's hard to be exact as games vary in size so much.

Not sure whether the operating system takes up more room but my xbox hard drive has filled pretty quickly. Having to delete to add games with gold releases

I'll be watching this with interest, same dilemma for me. Daughter currently uses a PS3 which is swaying me towards the PS4 although I'm sure she'd pick the Xbox up in about 2 mins while I looked at manual lol

But the bigger question is, who is it for - you or the kids

Unlike the Xbox 360, the Xbox One requires large downloads for games even when you have them on disc and we filled the 500GB hard drive very quickly. If you can afford the extra I would go for the 1TB version.

Luckily for me I punted my PS4 last week before I saw the price drop coming. I had the Xbox 360 and Ps3 and always played the Xbox first. I used to be a PC gamer and consoles never really cut it for me. If I was to buy one again it would be Xbox One, however with stellar titles on both platforms it's getting harder and harder to just own one these days.

XBone has the poorer interface, but most people prefer the XBone controller.

If you're going to play games online, just buy the one that your mates have.

I couldn't decide so spend a fortune on a new PC instead :D

I have had Playstation 1/2 and currently have the PS3 sat on the desk next to my PC - I tried the XBox consoles but I just don't like the controllers so if I pick a new one up I will be going for the PS4

Only problem is I would have to re-arrange my desk to fit everything on as I have still got games on the PS3 to complete.....
