Would you rather be a Good Driver or a Good Putter?

I would rather be a good driver.

I enjoy hitting the ball well, and not necessarily scoring so well, than hitting it crap, and scrambling a round together with great putting. The ultimate score is not so important to me these days, apart from this weekend of course.

driving as i get more of a kick from hitting a good drive! putting is where the score is made or lost but thats not the question here!

Again I suppose another way of thinking of it is would you rather on a Par5?

1. Hit the fairway, 2nd shot hit the green and three putt for a 5

OR

2. Hit it in the trees, 2nd chip out, 3rd lay up, 4th Hit the green and leave a 30ft putt, 5th drain your putt!

Again 1st one for me.

Driving for me, for 2 reasons.

1) Given that either way round we're shooting the same score, I feel better about my game after a good driving round than a good putting round. If I score well through my putting I feel like I've escaped with the score.

2) Out of the 2 I think it's easier to become a better putter through practice than sort an errant driver out.

I also could be swayed by the fact that I'm averaging around 31 putts this year and only 4 or 5 fairways a round.

In my last medal round I hit 8 GIR, which produced 1 par and 7 bogies. I also had my first eagle putt the other day and walked away with a par. I'd kill most of you to be decent putter!

Rather be a brilliant driver
Putting can be worked on and is the smallest and easiest stroke in the bag. I am a cr*p putter though unless I just take one look, walk up and bang! instinctive putting works wonders for me

Has to be putting. If I can have a chip and putt for par, I'm happy. Even if I take an iron of the tee. You could play par golf with no driver. But not with bad putting.

Putting all day long. You can hit every fairway and bang it miles done the middle but it you can't get it in the hole at the other end your scorecard will suffer

As this. With the exception of the first hole i drove really well yesterday. But i could knock between 10 and 15 shots off my score from misjudged putts. Not even badly weighted, just off to the side by about an inch. Gonna get myself Bob Rotella's book i think !!!
