So technically (i'm purposely playing devils advocate), the kid could have been bang up for it, realised it hurt and didn't want the second... That then makes it a more interesting debate in my opinion...
I wondered about that when I first read the opening post, how the OP knew next door as well as, where he was.
Maybe the OP jumped to a conclusion due to his very strong opinions on the matter calling it Child Abuse and Mutilation. Using such terms is extreme to something that is not illegal and in fact in some cultures not seen as a problem at all.
Don't get me wrong if the child had one ear done and then said no to the other and still did after a few minutes to think about it. I would have just removed the one done and let it heal up. As you say a much more interesting debate would have followed and open for both sides to discuss in full. You could have ended up with a discussion that took a completely different path, about ages, legal position, consent, morals, what both sides of the discussion believe in and so on
The opening post is actually the opposite kind of post that only allows people with the same beliefs to post unless someone is looking for an argument over the matter, so effectively we end up in the sheep field with everyone agreeing on the matter.
All the best.
