Over the last couple of weeks ive been having some problems hitting my irons, even to the extent that i didnt know what i was doing. So i thought i finally need to swallow my pride and have some lessons. Then i thought sod it work it out yourself.I have been working extremely hard on my short game recently and it is finally playing me back.So ive have been working on the irons over the last few days and now all my game is the best its been.2nd last week in the medal and today +7 in the bogey. So are you like me and work it out yourself or are you a lesson man,or are you like my mate a moaner who instead of working his problems out will just moan about his game everytime he plays.

ive never paid for lessons, i try and work things out myself although after next season i will maybe have lessons. i do take on board any pointers from my different playing partners. (very helpfull in telling me what im doing wrong) this and my own thought process have helped me out. im a plumbing and heating engineer and my thought process from work helps

I usually work it out myself, but if I have real problems I ask fellow golfers for advice. Jammydodger is happy to offer tips and point out anything that looks amiss, it wasn't until he mentionned it that I noticed my alignment is all over the place I'll now work on that by myself over the winter.

I played at Copthorne the other week with JustOne. It's right under the flight path into Gatwick. Three pilots shouted out as the went overhead that my alignment was out it was that noticeable.

I've had a few lessons in the past. Some good, some bad. Have used the services of 3 Pros to date, the last being the best (and the cheapest!)
I tend to work things out myself now. So far my game has improved. I'm hitting the irons a lot sweeter and further. My driving has its up and downs and I'm working hard on my putting (my nemesis) and things are lookinh hopeful.

I do plan on visiting my Pro sometime during the winter months for a refresher and to iron out a few faults I know are still hanging on there.
I'm also thinking of playing a few informal winter turn ups at the club just keep my hand in. I don't want to get stale over the winter.

Up to now iv been working it out myself.....never had a lesson....Only what iv read in books or what iv picked up from the TV......
Lately though im punishing myself off the tee's with either a Hook or a block and im struggling as to whats causing the inconsistency......
Also i wasnt aware of this but my dad who's my regular playing partner has noticed that when i hit the bad shots that i seem to be standing too far wawy from the ball.....
So im going to do a little homework on this an see is it he problem.......
Also when i feel im aligned correctly and have hit the sot my divots seem to tell the truth.....There pointing 15-20 yrds left of where i was aiming but the ball has gone right :D

Back to the drawing board i reckon.....
I was going to get a lesson a month for the winter but i dont want to give in just yet.

Having had quite a lot of lessons over the years, these days I'll try to work things out myself initially on the basis of what I've previously been taught, especially if it's an old problem coming back. I'll book a lesson if it's a new problem or I can't work out what's going wrong. I also usually have a pre-season check each year to look at set up and swing. Have also found specific lessons on bunker play, chipping, putting etc over the years have been very useful.

My experience with lessons has generally been very good. Our pro is a very good teacher. He helped me get rid of my slice many years ago so I came down from 16 to 10 in about 2 years, and has helped me with loads of other stuff (crisper irons, short game technique, course management tips, etc).

Is this a bit like driving around for an hour before you ask for directions? I never understand why a lot of golfers see lessons as a last resort, ultimately getting a decent teaching pro to take a look will save you an awful lot of time and effort

Tried working things out for myself to the point where it bacame one huge mess. I'd rather have a pro look at it and spot the problems straight away and offer some drills and help to fix it rather than lose hope on my own at the range for sessions on end
