Dross is also the scum or waste of molten metal. In electronics it is the waste from wave soldering that is unusable. It is a catch all for waste basically.

I have used 'they' for years if something I'm talking about applies to both male and female and I'm not wishing to exclude either he or she from what I'm writing - because I k now that I don't need to - and I prefer using it to he/she or (s)he. Sometimes it can sound a little odd - but never wrong.

They and their are not singular words. People use them that way now, but I never wiil. When i was taught grammar, it was considered incorrect.
