Winter League

Yup. This year it is 6 rounds of foursomes, worst 2 scores discounted. Stableford format

2nd year of ours starts Nov 1st
Individual stableford off the yellows, best 5 cards from 20 until March 31st.
Cards must be stamped by the shop and must be returned or it goes down as Nil Points...
Divisionalised up to 12, 13-20, 21-28.
You need 200 points to be in with a chance..!

Pairs match play. 6 leagues of 12, all play each other top 2 go through to knock out stage and 3rd place teams play off for the other 4 knockout places. Best comp of the year

Played as pairs, three rounds, between Nov and Feb. First played as BetterBall, then Greensomes, finally Foursomes.

Whilst each comp is considered separately for prizes the overall winter league title is awarded to the pair only if they have played all three rounds together.

Fourball better ball matchplay.

5 divisions of 8, play each pair twice gives 14 games.
Then best three teams from each division go through plus one best loser to last 16 KO, final usually played 2 or 3 weeks before new season starts in April.

Always very competitive and great fun, gets me out on the course on days when I'd otherwise stay in bed.

Ours is 10 x 4bbb. Top 6 scores count.

There's some race to dubai type stuff toward the end to keep interest. Not worked it out yet though.

Only potential downside is that it's a 13 hole format. Not sure how much of a negative that is yet...

Have one at mine but never bother with it as its full of cheating wallopers. We have an eclectic amongst our squad 18 guys which started this week till end of Feb best score wins £120, so keeps you competitive

8 groups of 5 - top two go through to KO after Jan

4BBB matchplay

Highly sought after comp and gets very serious

Won it a couple years back

Crikey, there is some complicated formats out there with different leagues etc!

We have two winter comps. One from end of season until end of December, other one is January first until start of another season.

Format is stapleford best four rounds to count, play as many rounds as you wish, anytime.

Unfortunately they are non qualifiers.

Ours is 4BBB sford, for 6 weeks and you can play Saturday and/or Sunday, puttinng in a maximum of 12 cards. Best 2 count for your score.

Top 16 pairs then go forward to the next round, where they all play on the same day and that score is added to the previous 2.

Top 8 then carry on, and then finally the final 4.

4BBB. The first stage is leagues of 6 so you play 5 matches. 1 point for a defeat, 3 points for a draw and 5 points for a win (I think). Top two in each group go through to the knockout stage

Stay with me - it's seems complicated but works great IMHO.

10 Saturday mornings before Xmas and 10 after.

Turn up and pairs are drawn out of a hat, mixed-up comp ladies & gents. Usually around 32 people.

Main event format is 4BBB stableford off 3/4 handicap

Best pairs' stableford score earns 10 points each, second best 7, third gets 5, 4th gets 4 etc. These points accumulate all winter to give the overall winner, but only your best 5 scores before New Year and your best 5 scores after New Year count. This is important as it means you don't really lose out if you are away or sick for a few weeks.

Each week there is a £2 entry/sweep fee per person, and you play for that against the other pair in your fourball - so win and your day is free, lose and it costs you £4. Monies go to prizes (50% on the day, 50% overall)

Guests are encouraged so you can bring a friend along for a game (if they don't have an official handicap they partner you and you can't score points that week, but can still have a nice game. )

Towards the end of the season when only a small number can conceivably win the overall comp we fix the draw so they can't get drawn as partners with each others but they do go out in head to head groups with the other contenders. This makes for exciting matches and ramps up the tension!

Upsides of this scheme are that:

(a) doing the live draw is always good fun with lots of booing , hackling and banter.
(b) you get different partners every week
(c) misery guts who don't want to be sociable tend to stay at home .
(d) you can decide on the day if you want to play - some people even stay home when it is pouring !
(e) New members admitted in January can join in and meet lots of folk and still compete for the post New Year Prize.

Downside (and it is biggie) - since you have to be there for the draw, if you are last out you have a long wait to go out and if you want to wait for the results and a first out you have a long wait for the last pair to come in. So it eats up a lot of your day.

At the end of the winter we have a nice dinner to which other halfs are invited and a Prize-giving.

The above might sound complicated but once you have a simple spreadsheet to keep a tally of the weekly points won it is pretty easy.

To be honest, I always feel a little sad when Spring comes and it finishes as it is the most fun golf of the year.
Starts this Saturday and I can't wait!:whoo:

PS If anyone is wondering what happens if the number turning up is not a multiple of 4 - we construct a series of three-balls and some ingenious scoring gymnastics which works very well too.

Ours is also based around 4BBB matchplay, with groups of 6-8 depending on the amount of sign-ups. Everyone plays each other once, with 2 points for a win and 1 for a halve. The top 2 go through to a 4BBB finals day, but in my opinion it would be better if it then went to KO.

Worth noting for anyone organising/competing in a 4BBB version, that as of Jan 1st 4BBB goes from 3/4 to 90%, so all comps should outline what is used from the off.

Yes, each week a different type of comp' is played (Texas scramble, 4BBB, indiv'l stab', foresomes etc), and points are awarded based finishing position.
Then leagues are created based on division.

1 shot is deducted from handicap for a win.

We have two, a Saturday league and a Sunday league. Both the same format:

16 pairs playing against each in other 4BBB matchplay. You get one point for winning the outward half, one for winning the inward and two for winning the match, so potential for four points. A good format as it can keep games going while you play "for the inward half" even if the match itself is won early.

Each pair plays the others once and the winners are the ones with the most points at the end.

We also have a knockout 4BBB cup, a straightforward best nett score at each hole comp and we end the season by mixing up all the partnerships and playing a best nett score foursome.

Keeps everyone playing and interested from October until March.

Would be interested to hear if your club has a winter league and what is the format?
Thanks
You beat me to it Matt... I was going to post the same question.
Some great ideas here guys.... I see some are run in Divisions & some just mixed up as much as possible. In deed, whilst its all a bit of winter fun-golf the...... 1. shortening of the course 2. Bumpy winter green condition 3. Possibilities of a number of Temporary Greens with big holes etc.......... it can make it difficult to handicap fairly. So does anyone go to greater reductions than 75%.... I have heard of 50% somewhere to give everyone a fair chance...... I know that 90% is coming next year for Summer golf but does seem a no-go'er in a Winter situation with restrictions as mentioned above. What do you think/do?

Our Winter League is called The Hillman Cup, its singles matchplay and its initially drawn I believe and I have my first match on Sunday morning after our team of 3 Winter Grumble stableford comp on Saturday.
