I looked at this yesterday, thank you @Bunkermagnet , but we didn't seem to qualify. I checked again this morning, on our remaining W10 computer, and there it was to click. Very happy about it but equally annoyed that it seems to have been a last minute thing. We replaced one computer unnecessarily

An update that only lasts one year and costs $30

That's a lot towards the cost of a new base unit for a desktop PC

Mind you I have already bought a W11 laptop to replace the desk top PC at some time.

Do not want to tempt fate but I ran XP pro for many years after update support ended.

It doesn't have to cost anything, it depends if you meet the criteria. Saying that, £22, or so, to keep an existing computer safe for another year. That isn't bad imo.

The issue is not whether it can keep running, it is whether it is vulnerable to attacks. I suspect there are far more online attacks now than in the days of XP

Go into settings, security and updates. You can access it from there
On the Windows update screen

I'm lucky. I have an old Lenovo ThinkPad X280 which I bought second hand off IT Zoo and that has upgraded to Windows 11, even to the latest one today, and runs fine with it. It runs an Intel i5 8350 CPU.
