Went to the range few weeks back when starting the swing rebuild, and they had a Wilson Staff demo day on.

I thought some of the gear looked good and got to have a whack with some of the gear and thought it felt superb was tempted at the time but my head ruled I don't need the gear.

However with this weather I've being doing the same as everyone else and looking online and come across the gear again and started contemplating buying, even though there isn't a need for it.

Been looking at these, which are what I tried and was even given my CF requirements for should I ever need it;

Likely hood I won't be changing but if I hit Cat1 as I hope to this season I will treat myself to probably the irons at least. But did get to thinking I don't recall seeing anybody at any course I've been to playing Wilson Staff gear with the exception of my old man who bought the FG Tour V2 irons last year. Is there a reason for this? Do club golfers now see Wilson as uncool and fuddy duddy?

IMO I think their staff offerings look class and having hit them wouldn't hesitate to switch as a reward to myself if I achieve my goals this year or get an end of year dividend on my shares.

I think its just a case of they don't spend as much marketing $$$$$$

Their stuffs good but they just don't/can't compete $$$$ wise with the TM's, Callaways, etc.

I think you should play whatever works for you - the game is hard enough as it is!!!

Wilson Staff is under rated IMO. The FG Blades are a thing of real beauty.
I bought the wife a FG Tour wedge a couple of weeks back and I'm so impressed by it I might get a couple myself.
Well made gear that looks the part. Yes they churn out some cheap crap in the package sets in the Wilson LS and WS ranges but the Staff gear is generally high quality.

Really like those blades.

They juust do not have the cool image of the other manufacturers. Off the top of your head how many tour players can you name that play them apart from Padraig. If you do watch the golf on TV regular then you could mention several players that use TM, Titleist, Ping, Mizuno and Cally. Go back to when I started palying golf in the early 90's and people used Wilson Staff. I remember having to make the call at one point between a set of Wilson Staff RM or a set of Titleist DCi (original gold ones). Loved them both, but my pro had the fitting cart for the Titleist so got those instead.

I think some of the companies like Wilson headed too much into the budget golf equipment market so have lost their premium equipment status. If they got some more top tour pros to use their equipment I am sure it would not take long for them to get back amongst the big boys. After all the kit can't be that bad, Padraig does ok with it.

Just from what I've watched this past 2 weeks, Padraig, Ricky Barnes, Kevin Streelman, Steve Webster and Paul Lawrie.

Admittedly most will only have heard of Harrington & Lawrie but possibly Barnes. Shows I watch to much golf.

Really like those blades.

So do I. I'm struggling not to send my specs to them.

But I guess everyone does buy into the marketing of an extra 17 yards or seeing the likes of Rose, DJ et al using TM.

Though IMO the slogan "most major wins in golf" as Wilson has is better. Will agree the lower end stuff probably puts people off using the quality staff offerings but maybe some young gun will come out using them and return former glory.

When I was getting into golf in the 70's and well into the 80's Wilson Staff was a top brand. Faldo and Langer both used their gear. The various FG blades have been classics for years.

I don't quite know why they lost their position as a big player in the premium golf market. Marketing I guess, but they are part of a huge sports brand and kept their profile in tennis - Federer and both the Williams sisters use Wilson. Wonder why the golf division did'nt do the same.

Back when I got into golf in the 80's they were a big name. They did some good gear. I have had a set and they were lovely although it was with the then new fat shaft which I didn't always feel comfy with looking down on. Since then they have drifted away but they did have a big push a through years back with the D, C (17 I think) ranges and the stuff you see in the stores are still good looking stuff but they've been usurped in the market mainly through advertising

Nothing wrong with Wilson gear, many majors have been won with Wilson equiptment most noticeably Harrington and Daly in recent years,Daly with a set of oversize Wilsons back in 95!.My local pro claims its all rubbish and steers people towards other brands but as the mark up on other brands is much more he would wouldn't he ;).Great value can be had with Wilson gear nowdays.

Exactly, the deep red range is budge and poor quality, only available from ag I think. Great for a novice taking the support up but add t they y don't see allot of your boys using them they would never upgrade to these,

If rather the fg62 that the MD Aston Martin stuff and I'd have about £800 change off retail price

Is actually like a set of combo, tour cavity from 4-6i the fg62 from 7i down

My first matched set of irons + the woods from the mid 70's thro' till the mid 80's were Wilson. The quality was excellent - deep chrome. I swtiched to Accushnet in the mid 80's for a few years before getting another set of Wilson Staff irons but they only lasted 6mths before I switched to Mizuno for quite a few years.

I've always had a hankering to go back to Wilson but maybe its the lack of marketing, or whatever, but they just don't have that buzz anymore.

I guess we've all become brainwashed by glitzy brochures and the hype.

Used Wilson Staff all my days.beautiful clubs, but the brand is definitely less fashionable. Anyone who sees my irons is usually impressed. I didnt set out to get another set of wilson, but they out performed everything else I tried

Like I said before Wilson have shot them self in the foot by making budget golf kit. This is my first thought when I think of Wilson club now unlike in back in the 80's or early 90's.

Do not get me wrong, I am not a golf snob and for someone who is starting out and wants a new set, or someone who just has a knock about once in a blue moon they are great.

But when I actually take time to think about what they offer I then remember they do top of the range beautiful looking kit like this:

I think their FG Tour / FG Tour V2 & FG62 blades are all very very nice irons, and Id be happy to bag the FG Tour, no probs

The rest of the brands offerings do nothing for me, never really found a wood they made I liked......
