I heard a news about Michelle Wie that she put college above golf. Maybe this is a big surprise to most people including me. Michelle Wie now is near to the summit of her career, if she give up her career and pursuite study, what a pity.

What career? She has had a terrible career to date (thanks in main toher parents) and it makes total sense to get some form of academic background in place. As for being at the pinnacle of her career I think there is at least another 15-20 years of golf should Wie decide to play that long for her to prove her doubters wrong.

So far her career has been pretty successful, I would say.

Firstly, she is made for life financially. Such security must be priority number 1.

Secondly, in terms of playing achievements, she has played very well in a Solheim Cup and has managed a couple of pretty high finishes, including second, I think, in a major and managed to get through q-school.

How many current professionals can say that they achieved the above while still teenagers?

Who cares ? not me for one she made her money ,$10 million from Sony and Nike years ago.
Watched her in the Solhiem Cup she had her caddy line her up to hit it sideways out the rough and they took 10 minutes to decide to do that , good ridance.

Apart from the Solheim Cup which she only got into as a pick and Q school which she had to do because she had no tour status (failure to qualify would have meant invites only and many sponsors saw her as damaged goods) she hasn't exactly set the golfing world alight.

No, she hasn't. But my point is, who has, at that age? She's achieved more than almost all golfers have achieved before they're 20, and more than most will achieve in their entire career, which surely means that she has had a pretty decent career to date.

I don't see how a load of missed cuts in mens events and an average performance as a teenager on the LPGA consitutes a stellar career and more than golfers her age. Look at Gulbis or Creamer and compare them ranking wise etc. I accept Wie may have more money thanks in main to corporate sponsorship but certainly nowhere near as much in career earnings as the two examples at the same age

I have no idea what Gulbis and Creamer had done by age 19 but even if she's achieved less than them, that doesn't make it a disaster. For every 1 who has achieved more than her by that age, there are probably 1,000 who have achieved less.

I think you need to put it in perspective and look at her career compared to the average teenage female golfer. She's done pretty well. You described her career so far as "terrible", which is absurd.

Only terrible in context of other female players on the tour during their teens. I agree that like many on the male tour (McIlroy being a prime example) they have achieved much in a short space. However in Wie's case I think she has earned more in terms of reputation by playing so many male events that she has achieved as a result of her golf.

I actually think she is a decent golfer who has been terribly managed and dominated by her parents. Now she has decent management behind her I think she'll do well going forward

Why do you find it surprising? She is just a kid still, she is doing what most well healed american kids do ..... go to college. I don't agree she has had a career either, she hasn't won anything, apart from some massive sponsorship deals. OK she played OK in the cup, but come on lets get real no career to speak about, yet.

So yes good for her go and enjoy college and live a bit of 'real life' if she can. Then if she still wants to play golf proffessionally go back to it and try again.

having made a study of the August issue for the focus group, the Wie article said that she is pursuing a degree but over 5 years. nothing about dropping golf more about fitting college round it.
