Played with couple of young lads last night off scratch and 4 and noticed their stance for driver was wider than I'd thought was needed, but they send the ball out fair way, leaving this ole 53 shaking his head some 20 yards behind them.
So what the hell, tried it today and Wowsers on 7 of the 11 holes where I use driver I was longer than I have ever been, alas on two of those 7, I was too long and double bogied, so will be 3 wood next time ;)

Why does the extra wide stance give you more length ? Probably could find out on "tup net" but full of cold and cant be arsed ;)

My guess - and it is a guess - is that 1. It moves the bottom of your swing back a touch (provided it's the right foot that's moved to make the stance wider (rh golfer)) so you hit it more on the up, and 2. It gives a more stable base so you can swing harder/faster.
