Why should 5 day members pay less

Yes!

Laleham is close to me and also does an off-peak membership, so quite a flexible approach to membership. Not the grandest of courses, but greens tend to be pretty good (maybe living in the past a bit on that one) and a 10mph breeze makes it quite tough!

I'm surprised more clubs don't offer an "off peak" and a "peak membership". Off peak could be Mon-Fri 7am - 4pm and perhaps Sundays after 12 and peak could be all times. You could then have a reduced fee for off peak members that wanted to play peak times. I think that would work better than the traditional 5 day memberships

Definitely a premium for weekend golfing.
My place is £485 for 5 day and £725 for 7 day. To the Golf Centre. Everyone then pays a further £50 to the club for GUI etc.

Thats £240 extra and for the guys who only get out on a Saturday and no other days its alot of money for 6 months golf with the weather we have had the past few years.

So £4 a week extra to play Sat and sun unlimited - yep defo a rip off

I'm a 5 day member at the moment and at my club until very recently the 5 dayers were not entitled to a handicap and so subsequently couldn't play any competitions.

I got into the club via the 5 day route. I dont see an issue having two fees. They have to pay a green fee at members guest rate (still not cheap) to enter and play the big honours board events so there is still a premium to be paid. I'm sure there has to be a viable economic reason to offer it or surely clubs would just have one flat fee and tough if you work and can only play summer evenings and weekends. Can't see that being popular

Not quite sure why the OP has been shot down in flames by one or two here. I think it's a perfectly valid and logical question and one I was only chatting about to a very longstanding and experienced golf club manager a couple of days ago.

At many clubs, a considerable number of the five-day members are older folk who are up the club practically every day midweek, while a lot of the 7-day members are once-a-weekend if they're lucky guys.

You only have to do the maths of that to understand why some think it's unfair that in some instances those who play the most are paying the least.

As others have suggested, in many ways it's a legacy of the past, when golf clubs were full and you were rarely granted 7-day membership straightaway, instead having to first join as a 5-day member and sit it out until 7-day membership became available.

When I first joined a club, I was a 5-day plus member which allowed me to play after 2.00 on one of the weekend days (can't remember which one). If that was all that was on the table now, I would be politely declining.

So not a stupid question or suggestion by any means in my book...

As far as running a business, 5 day members are entirely logical. Do you question your health club / gym membership pricing policy?

I didn't say rip off. But in almost every aspect of life the more you buy the better the price.

The price per day for a year for 5 day is £97. Its a further £120 per day for the weekend days.

As Jezze says there are many 5 day members who will get as much golf in 6 weeks as those paying for 7 days get in 6 months.

I just don't see why 7 day members should subsidise the 5 day members. And just noticed my place offers a club 55 Tuesday & Thursday 2 day membership for £295 or £147.50.

So over all the best value per day is 5 day membership. Irregardless of rounds played.

nearly all the 5 day members i know dont work due to early retirement or getting a large hand out and pension when they get made redundant ( civil servants !!!!) and they play 4 or 5 times a week with a comp for 5 days on a thursday, they use the club house play snooker etc etc,now due to working mon-fri at best i could only get 2 rounds in a week, who's the mug,and for board comps they can enter at reduced green fee, stroll on retirement.

5 day members have fewer playing rights than 7day members, and they only get to play on the quiet days of the week, that's why they pay less. The fact that some of them are retired and able to make more use of the facilities is just lucky for them. This is just a bunch a bitter whining because someone is perceived to be getting a better deal.
What about all those 7day members who are retired? They pay the same as me but get to use the course EVEN MORE!!!! This is an outrage.
We'll all get to retirement at some point and be able to take advantage of it then, why whine about it now. Makes no sense at all to me.

Why is it cheaper to go to the pictures on a Monday afternoon? It's the same film.
Why do restaurants offer mid week lunch deals? It's the same food.
Why is happy hour 5-6 in the week and not 8-9 on a Saturday night? It's the same beer.
Why does it cost less to play Woburn in February than it does in July? It's the same course.

Supply and demand, that's why.

Add to those comments that the retired may well be on a reduced income. Offer them a reduced deal in the club to play at the quiet times and keep some income, or force them out by whacking the price up and get nothing from me? No brainer for me. As long as they rake the bunkers, repair the pitch marks and replace the divots I won't know they've been playing so why should I be worried. I may be quite happy to drop back to 5 day membership at that stage of my golfing life.

The only thing I can think is that if you think you are subsidizing 5 day members with your subs as a 7 day member then move to another club where you feel this doesn't happen. For me 5 day membership makes sense as a business plan for a Golf Club just like reduced membership for Juniors and Students etc.
