Went out last night for a medal and played well on the front nine. This was not reflected in my scoring at all with me shooting 9 over on the front (handicap of 12 so should be around +6).

This front 9 included a 3 putt for par having hit the par 5 in two, a lipped out sand shot, a massive duck hook into the trees that came from nowhere and a short par 4 where I played 3 good shots that just didn't react how they should have giving me a 5.

Stepped on to the 10th tee and from that moment on it all changed. I was standing on the 17th tee and I was 1 over for the back nine, somehow with a chance for a cut. Par, par is a very achievable finish here. Hooked my tee shot on 17 and 3 putted 18. The overall result- 12 over. No cut!

I think my head is getting the better of me but I ended up infuriated. Especially after the 3 putt on 18.

The only thing I can take from this is that our greens are so inconsistent after the winter that judging pace was nigh on impossible.

Being brutally harsh, this sounds like a woe is me. I've had plenty of those so I'm not criticising. Hooks, three putts bad breaks, losing the head. Had all of those. I would focus on the good back nine (bar the last) and the fact that the greens will improve. On the plus side I wouldn't get too down as you played to handicap despite it all so there's a good game in there

Sounds like you played like someone with a 12 hc, good holes, bad holes, good shots, bad shot. Nothing much to worry about

To paraphrase an old saying "Such is Golf"!

You can play well and score badly, play badly and score well, and more often than not play badly and score even worse.

One 9 can be entirely different to the next, just as one hole can be entirely different to the next.

That is why at times I hate and love the game in equal measure!

But more often than not I love the game and just suck it up!

I would not say golf was unfair to you here. On a bad day you ground out buffer. I would give yourself a good pat on the back for a job well done. No one ever gets it easy but the reasonable players work hard to make sure that not easy does not turn into disaster. Nice one.

I agree with you Homer, it is my own fault. I just bemoan that all I need is that one round where it all comes together and I think everything will start to fall into place for a kick on for the season.

Still, take the positives on to next week and hope to score better. And hope for better greens!

I think we all get infuriated by the few bad holes that cost us our good round!

To me, this would fill me with optimism - played to handicap but identified areas where shots could be gained with some work (possibly 2 shots from putting practice, 2 shots from consistent tee shots but every round is different so would this be the normal places where shots are lost or are those specific to this round?).

They were shots that should not have happened- hook left when my bad shot is right- I never end up left! Maybe my frustrations trying to get to single figures is getting the best of me!
