Free of charge as well ;)

Bizarrely, to fly out for Op Resolute in the mid 90's, it was an American Airlines Tri-star that took us there. Thankfully normal service was resumed with the provision of a mixture of Chinook and fat albert for R & R flights :(. Nothing fun about them.

Flights on a Herc are wonderful - especially if you stopped of at Cyprus and someone had put in a car they were shipping back. Slept in the back of a merc on one trip

Respect to the Bootnecks, Pongos and Crab Fats but cruising with the Grey Funnel Fleet was what let people sleep safely in their beds :)

Without getting too involved in something I know little about, I would just like to say I have the GREATEST admiration for every one of our troops, to whom I am eternally grateful for the sacrifices they make on my behalf. I would also like to say these Guys and Gels should be afforded the BEST money can buy when we are sending them out to get shot at in the process of defending our liberty in atrocious conditions. Makes me physically sick when the parasites who are in charge of the purse strings see it more important to allocate monies to themselves to "clean out" their fish pond, continue to claim for a mortgage which is paid off etc etc etc than gearing up these lads and lasses so their life is as protected as it can be on the front line.......

When I was in the RAF, body armour was never my concern. More importantly we had to make sure the hotel would get my dry cleaning done within 12hrs - that was always an issue when we had to drop down to 4 star places ;)

as as a wise man once said "we check in, we don't dig in" I remember after basic training swapping the backpack for a samsonite case

I am currently serving. The kit we get know is far superior to what was issued in previous years. We get personal issue osprey CBA and get issued either mendal or magnum boots for out in the desert. We get balistic eye protection in the form of goggles and wrap round sunglasses that have interchangeable lenses for different levels of light.

If someone does choose to purchase their own kit as it is better for their specialised job then that is their choice even though they should be getting it issued if that is the case.
