Ahhh the old long is better debate cunningly disguised in Mickleson shaped wrapping paper. I'd have thought at Congressional straight wins the day. None of these top guys (yes even Donald etc) are that short in truth. McIlroy scored because he found the fairway irrespective of how far he hit it. Look at the top 10 on the board. They all got there by being straighter than Lefty, Westwood and others
Then I think we have agreed! The best golg is long and straight with zero need for a short game. And this easiest learned and grooved on the range.

Yup being long and having no short game will lead to the best golg....
It's been one round , short game is defined by shots under 100 yards irrespective of being on fairway on in rough. What Phil was doing to day was scrambling, using his skills to keep him in contention.you don't a Major win on the first day but you sure as hell can lose it
Tim, when did you ever hear someone saying it took them 4 shots to get down to shortgame range? Its always great drive, pity it took X amount to get down. Golf is like dating, you should look at long game as Handsome looks, shortgame is the personality, you will have more success if you can have both.

We all talk about Mickelson's short game, but his first shot with I think a 9i went straight into the water
and he almost put his second shot in there as well
On the second he squirts a 2i wide into the rough and got lucky that it jumped out of the really heavy stuff and into the next level of rough. This was the one were he had mud on his ball.
The one he smacked out way left (again) was another 2i, he was supposed to be playing safe
Here are the stats
Rory fair 9/14 gir 17/18 av drive 318
Phil fair 5/18 gir 8/18 av drive 314
The point I am trying to make is, even when he played for saftey he cock it up

Unless you can get to the green there is no need for a short game, but it becomes something of a necessity when you do get there.

I thought the aim of golf was to get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible? Surely this then means that putting is the most important part of your game!!
