Why does Phil Mickelson...

...hit the ball so hard? He's always in trouble from the tee.

Oh dear Timy u r leaving yourself open there!

Anyway on a serious note i recon he will end up in the top 3!

and may even find the fairway tomorrow :D

Years ago, before he won any Majors, he was a "bomber", always trying to knock the case off the ball in search of a few extra yards.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think Butch Harmon eventually managed to convince him to cut back on the distance if he was going to win Majors.
Cut back he did and then won 4.
Looks to me like he's gone back to trying to bomb it and his swing just can't cope with it. If he can get the ball in play he's not unbeatable but well on the way to it.

Wasn't it Phil who turned up to the Open a while back promising to tame the course by bombing it as often as possible.

And that worked, didn't it. :o

with his short game it doesnt matter where he puts it :D think he always goes for the money shot too often though, but judging by his bank balance he,s not done bad from it, wish my mishits went 260 yards

To be fair, that gentle 310 was a 3 wood for mcilroy!!

I know what you mean though, phil does give it the beans with the driver. He'd be plenty long enough if he toned it down a little

Did anyone see the 5 iron (looked like one) that he hit off the tee for safety and he missed the world? He's "Tiger bad" off the tee some days. Highly entertaining.... but bloody awful on bad days like this.

It was entertaining. I would have killed a spectator with an attempt at that flop shot and that full swing. I'd say a pretty impressive score considering.

He was putting his tee shots in some amazing places but the Seve comparison wasn't far off. Saved some incredible pars and bogeys that could have been doubles or trebles for anyone else. Hard to understand though how such a good player can be so wayward. Very interesting comparison with Rory who was striking the ball superbly.

This answers the what is better question: long game or short game?

Phil, an amazing short game saves an otherwise cricket score with some superb up and down saves, +2

Rory, hits 17/18 greens in regulation, -6

The short game saves the day, the long game wins it.

I really dont see the point of going out and trying to muscle your way round a course and then relying on your skills round the green to salvage a score. If he played more sensibly off the tee, surely he would be in better positions where his short game skills would be used in a more attacking way than currently, just trying to get out of sh*t!

Chris

Agreed
If he'd hit more fairways he'd have made a much better score. But his short game saved him a hatful of shots.

Tim.
Of course hitting fairways and greens and then 1 putting 6 times is going to get you a better score than hitting it sideways and having to scramble - that's a no-brainer.
Looking at the driving distance stats they showed on the TV, Rory was almost always behind Mickleson and Johnson - hitting it long, just not as long.
Micklesons short game has kept him in contention - just.

Ahhhh, but if Phil wasn't trying to knock the cover off the ball, he might have hit more fairways, and then GIR's

Very good point Tim,however Rory is far from winning it,lets see if his short game come sunday when the pressures on holds up.
I personally think its a combination of the two, putting yourself in position off the tee will obviously be better than the rough, however Rorys short game was great too,in fact he had a few more chances and he could have been 8 or 9 under. :)
