Whos going to come and fill the gap?

No one, Woods at the moment is irreplaceable, I don't think he will be gone that long, and I don't think any one will take over at no 1.

how long does it take to lose the #1 spot? Does he need to play to keep it, return a certain number of cards and if he doesn't play for a whole season, does he then need to qualify to play again? I'm guessing if there are any rules like that, that they'd probably give someone of Tiger's caliber some leeway.

Its all to do with average points over the last 40 tourne's over 2 years. Tiger is so much better than everyone else that he didn't loose it during his last absence this time he might, as his last absence is still relevant so will loose points quicker.

In Tigers absence i would expect to see Stryker, Furyk, Westwood, Harrington, Mickleson and Casey doing well based on recent form.
But Paul Casey needs to recover fully from his injury. If he does then he would get my vote out of these to do best of all.
