Who cares about distance (driver) whats the most....

I think at the end of the day birdies are the name of the game you have to have birdies to go low and have serious handicap cuts IMHO. TBH birdies and eagles are what make the game fun.

with Screwback on this one.....I'd much rather have a par round with 5 birdies & 5 bogies than one with 18 pars, as I know I have the potential to shoot an under par round one day.
Just need to ditch the bogies now and a sub par round is on the cards this year....it's just a matter of when :D

I'd prefer the consistancy of making steady pars with the odd birdie/bogey rather than feast or famine with a good hole and then a bad one. Plays havoc with concentration having to keep battling back from a set back (bouncebackability) to keep the score going. A nice smooth passage with a holed putt offset by maybe the odd poor shot would do me

You've just summed up my game, Homer. And yes, at age 53 with a dodgy neck, I'm probably not as long as some of the young guns on the forum, but I am very happy with my game at the moment.

Don't care much about driver distance so long as it's over 220 and on the fairway. That usually does the trick.

Most birdies? 5 quite a few times, including my only visit to Scotscraig in the first ten holes. That was quite surreal. Chip ins, 40 yard putts, you name it. 3 in a row's my best.

18 pars thanks. I'm fairly certain that a level par round, off 10, would win most competitions and get my handicap down.

I'm also fairly certain that if I did it often enough I'd eventually be off scratch...

Look for pars - the birdies will look after themselves.

This part is very true AW. My pro gave me a game to play if you are ever out playing as single which goes some way to demo this:

When playing every full approach shot to each green, hit one ball aiming for the centre of the green and another ball where you go flag hunting. I have played this game many times and I have only beaten the "safe" ball score on one occaision. Quite often there has been as much as 6 or 7 shots difference between the two.

Playing this game is also the one time where i did a "Nick Faldo" and hit 18 pars with the "safe" ball. :D

I see where some of you "i would prefer to shoot 18 pars in round" are coming from yes it would be good but not exactly realistic to go 18 straight pars??? I got advice from a pro once who said play every hole for birdie and you dont put as much pressure on the par.

TBH If you dont play to shoot birdies you are not having as much fun on the course as you could have...

I'm not sure thats right. OUR SSS is 66, we are a Par 70. so if i only ever shot exactly 70 i'd never get to scratch because to get a handicap cut i need a net score better than the SSS. To get to scratch i'd need (at some point) to start shooting sub 70.

Is this right?
