Who buys a club on looks and hype alone?

It amazes me how often people plan a club purchase only from a picture they have seen, especially when it is the latest club from a top manufactuer. Sometimes see it on here and often hear of people at the club talking about buying a club when it becomes available.

Surely if your going to spend £250 on a golf club your going to test 5-8 clubs within the price range and go for the one which you strike the best, not the one you think will sit in your bag the best...

If I had a pound for everytime I've heard of someone looking to buy a white-headed TaylorMade driver, I'd probably be able to buy one myself. Seems people dont wish to consider Ping, Cleveland, Corba Titleist etc

Me as it happens. I love the look of the Wilsn FG62's and I will be parting with my money if I manage to make any sort of connection with my first swing. They are withoutt doubt the sexiest irons I have seen in a long long time. I have always been married to Mizzy irons but I think it's time to take a mistress......

cosmetics and how it looks standing over the club has a good percentage of deciding to purchace , not the hype for me though, if it is not pleasing on the eye i will not consider it.

You'll love them. Absolutely awesome irons.

I bought my S57s blind. Got fitted for S56's, then found S57's on ebay for silly cheap in the exact spec. Was a no brainer

i haven't done but i probably would.

what usually makes me think "i wouldn't mind that" is when i read reviews of how good the club is,not necessarily how it looks but how it performs.

even then the club may not work well for me as it does for others but to this day i haven't bought a brand new club of any significant cost.i tend to buy 2nd hand from ebay and or only buy wedges new.

I have in the past but not any more.

As an example, I recently brought a Mizuno MP-630 driver. Now this driver isn't the best looking, in fact you could call it bland compared to TM, Cally and Cobra's latest offerings. In the spec department it's probably better suited to a lower handicap player than myself (Open face at address etc)

But...........

I hit this better, straighter, maybe fractionally longer than my previous drivers.

I'm off for a putter fitting a week today. I'm going with an open mind with regards to brand (Was set on having a Scotty), shape and style and will end up buying the one that I hole the most putts with and the one I can look down on with confidence.

..... So long as it isn't an Orion Black Hawk........ They're just rank!!

I'm actually quite sure that everyone has been guilty of this at some stage!

you are absolutely right - one should take price into account as well as looks and hype :)

Guilty as charged ! However recently I have been for fittings in respect of woods and irons before buying and took onboard the advice and results.

Never buy latest line. Always last years or so. So cost is a major consideration. But I also have to fall in love with the looks as well. Will read every review I can from normal golfers. Then make a short list and go and try them. For example my TM TP CB irons only cost £280 4-AW brand new.

Then they take pride of place in the lounge so I can sit and drool over them. HID's thinks I'm mad by the way.

dont ususually buy clubs on the look of them alone, i tend to adopt a one in one out policy, tho depending on how much they cost its sometimes a 2 or 3 out 1 in policy :(

I am not an impulse buyer and just because something claims to be longer, straighter, better etc I don't just buy into it, I have to try it first. I've tried all the Whiteheaded offerings and many others out there but found the best for me was Pings G20 I hit it longer, straighter and found it to be better for me, it also happened to be one of the less costly products I tried. So not only did I get what was right for me I saved a pretty penny to, so much so I bought the 3 wood as well and all for less than the cost of an R11 which I tried.

That said I do really like the look of the Ping i20 irons it's very tempting to just go buy them, but i've held back and lined up a fitting and trial at a local club:fore:.

bought an R9 as an upgrade to my R7 on the looks alone and sold it two weeks later to my brother. Looks beautiful but wasnt doing the business so went back to my old driver.

all the new clubs that are hyped up and that, i try them and judge them on how i hit them
Never bought a club that ive not tested

The Callaway advert alone makes me want too! Stupid buying signals!

In all honesty though I know im not good enough to warrent that amount of money on a driver. (says the man willing to part with 400 on a trolley)

One day maybe... when the 2013 new clubs are out!

Nope. Never. I have always hit the club I'm buying wouldn't dream of paying £2-300 for a driver or £500+ on a set of irons I don't know I can use. Would you buy a car, even second hand unseen?

Bought my Burner 3 wood without even hitting it. Loved the look of it and had heard reports/reviews about them being pretty easy to hit, saw one at a good price and bought it. Fortunately it has been in the bag ever since and works well. Wouldn't be something I would advise donig though or something I would be likely to do again.

Only happened the one time, never to be repeated again.

When the R9 first released, bought one without hitting a single ball. IMO, horrible club. Thankfully, TM were doing a promotion at the time. Pay full price and play it for a month. If you didn't like it, you could return it and get refunded the full amount... RESULT! I returned it full of sky marks.... Hahahahahaha.
