I honestly cant believe that for the sake of 2 shots some people would settle for 4th instead of 1st

I believe we are all steely-eyed competitive people underneath the British 'i'm happy to play to my handicap' bull - we just don't like to admit it.
..the question was regarding a club stableford ,, are ye'r prizes that good for that kinda comp? i will however admit if it were captains / presidents prize or national or representive comp then it would be different, it would be about recording best score , for normal weekly comps attitude would be to better the handicap every time, prize or no prize

Doesn't matter about the prize, could be 50p for all I care - but I would prefer to come first in any contest - even if I felt I hadn't played well.

No problem, I know what you mean - I enjoy all forms of golf whether it's competitive or a knock about with mates and, recently, it has been the latter as I am not a member anywhere.

However, when I was a memeber and I played competitively I wanted to win. I could be content with playing well and not winning but unless I won the competition, I could never be fully satisfied that I achieved what I set out to do that day.

I totally understand that is unrealistic to assume I would win every competition I entered, but I went in with the mindset that I could.

Difficult to explain as I really enjoy all forms of golf and felt I wasn't being overly competitive.

I never went home and kicked the cat after a bad round :D :D

I came 3rd in my division in our recent medal and shot 1 under h/cap. I am much happier with that than I would have been with winning at +1. That said for medals, stablefords etc the aim is to beat my h/cap, winning is a bonus BUT

If it were an honours board competition...

I would rather win.

If I won any competition playing to one over my handicap at my club, the conditions must have been atrocious and it would had to have been a hell of a round of golf.

You just don't win anything without playing really well.

Ergo, you must have played really well to have won.

Everything for me is about bringing the handicap down.

Unless I'm playing Fragger and then EVERYTHING is about winning - sod the score!!

Why can't I shoot 1 under handicap and still win, Bob?

If you've won playing over your handicap either the conditions were atrocious or nobody else turned up. A win is a win and you can only post the best score on the day and see if its good enough. I'd take it. If you play well regularly the cuts take care of themselves

I'd take 4th and beating my handicap....
Patience is everything to me..And if im beating my handicap then i know that im progressing so its only a matter of time before a win is on the cards....

That said i am very competitive by nature from playing football...But i know that you cant win everything....Trying to win every week just isnt possible as the added pressure on yourself would be detrimental.....

Having only just started playing comps with the aim of reducing my H/C I would have to say the 1 under and a cut but...

Both suggest to me "a good days golf" so I would be (very very) happy with either
