Option 2 every time for me.

I'm 40 in a couple of years and will be doing a trip up to St Andrews with my brother in law (also turns 40 then). As you've already done those what about somewhere like Northern Ireland and do RCD, Portrush etc... bigger the better.

Southport's a great shout as well as they are all right next to each other and it can be a decent night out.

You better take your passport to prove your age though. If Carling did tough paper rounds .........:D

 I get that a lot...

At a top course with a custom fit in the morning and a round in the afternoon?

+1 top idea... I can see a GM fitting day and a feature going 'life starts at 40'... Wentworth would make a good setting after being fig on TM kit which match the grey hairs.. And being challenged to stay under 40 on either the front or back 9

Calling GM towers....

Would be Option 2 for me.. I just can't see how a custom fitted set of clubs would really benefit someone who can only play 18-20 times per year.. Find a great area/course that you can take the Missus to as well.. Just remember, it might be your 40th, but it's a big day for her as well...

Option 2.

Experiences and memories like that will live with you forever.

Have you considered a trip to play the courses that Kent has to offer? Depending on where you're travelling from, you could maybe start with a Surry course, St Georges Hill / West Hill / Woking / Worplesdon, or Walton Heath, or if you're coming from Essex, maybe Tandridge or the London Club, then head on down to the coast and play Princes, Royal St Georges and Royal Cinque Ports, or mix in North Foreland, or Littlestone. Loads of options.

Anyway, couldn't see something like this suggested elsewhere so thought I'd throw it out there!

Option2, with one slight alteration..... a professional caddie to help steer me round! :D

The enjoyment comes from playing well too, not from just hacking it round. I'd not be very happy to scab it round in 90 strokes each time - that would be a memory to forget. :sbox:

top course

me and moogie just been talking about custom fitting while playing round my place tonight and ive got to 6 without any custom fitting

personally think waste of time as its done on how you swing the club that day
we are handicapped golfers we get shots why have custom fitted

It wasn't so much the custom fit that was my main motivation, more the fact that I've never owned a brand new set of irons. But I suppose the enjoyment only lasts until you hit your first hidden stone on a fairway and take a chunk out of the bottom of one of your new babies.

I'd go top courses.
Done similar for me and bro in-laws 30th's couple years ago with a few mates when we played at Gleneagles. I wanted to play the kings course but the rest all wanted to play the centenary course cos they wanted to play same course that Ryder cup will be played over. I gave in and played centenary. Still really enjoyed it and best memory is hitting 4 iron to 6 feet on stroke index 1 hole (think it's the 5th hole) then knocking in putt for birdie. Walked up to next hole, cracking little par 3 and knocked an 8 iron to no more than 2 inches from my first ever ace.

Needless to say the wheels came off straight after that but I shall be watching Rory closely over those 2 holes in Ryder cup to see if he can do any better.

I remember the whole day well (unusual for me) and the set up up there is fantastic. We all agreed we'd be back up to play the other 2 courses.

Always nice gettin some nice new shinies but the memories of playing top course will last longer than the honeymoon period of the new clubs :-P

Courses for me with a warning.

I once watched a group of 4 'good ol boys' teeing off at 4pm at Turnberry in the middle of summer.
They were playing all the Scottish Open Courses over four days. Top hotels, limos, caddies the lot.

They had four days of the most horrendous weather. They played four holes and walked in. It must have cost them about £500 a hole.
They were real gents and just shrugged their shoulders with a 'that's life' attitude. Bet they will remember their 'Scottish Trip'
