Hi all

I only really play my home course apart from three or four times a year.

I now want a GPS to map it as it is an obscure small club in South West France. Can I map hazards etc?

I need also to check my club yardages and measre practice targets precisely.

What do you think?

Tanks for reading.

I guess it depends on how much you want to pay for the actual unit. The SC2.5 is pretty good but not the cheapest.

Thanks for that the budjet is not the problem....skycaddie seem the main choice but is it right for my use?

Thanks again

Hi.

Can I suggest that you have a look at my review of Freecaddie in the review form on here.

If you have a GPS enabled pocket pc phone or PDA I'd suggest taking a look. Max cost is less than 25 dollars, for the all in package. Though if you only want front, middle, back of green it's absolutely free.

Take a look at the review for the details though.

I'd be as bold to say accurate enough for our ability.

By that I mean, it's useful to know what carry is required for a particular hazard, or what lay up is required not to end up in the hazard.

Typically it depends on the unit used and the number of sattelites obtained. But for a modern unit, it would typically be within 3 yards.

I find the whole GPS thing for "home club" use a bit odd.

I'd like one and think they are great.....don't get me wrong....

BUT, I know what's going on at my home course. If the marker/stroke-saver/150 stick says it's XXX yards, and XXX yards never seems right, I work out a different strategy....

We have two weird ones at mine. The 150 on 11th is wrong (it's 163, because it's two yards up from a tree that is 165 on the stroke saver) and another one on the 18th.

I know which things are out.....

I realise this is not relevant to some of your post... :(

I have a Garmin Etrex which is good for walking, cycling and roads. But I have mapped every green and tee on my home course, plus some bunkers and water hazards. It doesn't need to be a golf specific unit - in fact I can't see why i would need that when the technology is there in every day units.
