when should someone stop

There is nothing wrong with someone taking 130 shots

there is something wrong with someone using a sky caddie to record them all

I'm sorry but I find that slow play is due to people having to spend 5 mins searching for their ball in rough rather than one poor lad taking 8 or 9 a hole (as long as he is just punting it up the fairway)

as long as he's not your greensome partner then i really dont see why its a problem!

chill...:D

the supply and demand equation for golf club membership has changed a great deal and there are very few courses who could currently enforce a rule of max 20 handicap for 7 day members, this may have been ok 15 yrs ago for some but very few would last long with rules like this in place now

Agghh i cant!! i'm wound up thinking about it again!! to reiterate, i have no problem with him shooting 130 or more! its the slow play between it... anyway, i have digressed from the OP. Apologies, now breathe....... LOL

When is enough enough? should the pro giving lessons not recognise that this is just not the sport for him?

That's as bad as a school teacher telling a kid they won't teach them any more because they're too thick.

It's upto the man himself if and when he gives up.

In fact it sounds more like the pro ought to be giving up if isn't able to teach the fella to improve at all!

i agree. i wouldnt play with that guy again! he is showing a lack of respect for his fellow players with his antics. he is clearly not ready 4 a proper round!

i have no problem taking beginners around the 9hole or taking them to the range to help them but this guy is taking the piss!

my dad wodnt be long taking that iphone off him or sending him packing! oldskool !

I agree, its his bat, his ball and his wicket!

Its NOT his wicket tho is it ?, well not soley his ..

I'd rather play with someone who hacks it all over the course but keeps up with play, than a cat' 1 player who doesn't.

.
I totaly agree with the statement but tell me how can someone who hacks it around keep up with play if the people in front are not hacking ?? run ?

I am not knockin people learning , we all have/had to learn but people need to be aware when you have a slot in a full time sheet in an activity that takes 3-4 hours playing well , you have a responsability to not ruin other members enjoyment ..

Honestly now ... if you played with a person hacking it around can you say it wouldnt affect your game .. & if it affected your game would you voluntarialy play with them again ..

I have recently taken up the game again after a few years off. A mate of mine also took up the sport for the first time. We hit the range quite a bit around September time then the par 3. Then on new years day played the main course. Now I've played the course before a few years ago but my friend hadnt played an 18 hole course before so we booked a tee time of 1pm twilight. This meant there was pretty much no-one behind us so we didn't feel like we were holding anyone up with our bad play. We have since progressed nicely. I think this should be the best way to do it.

So only one game a year

One of my mates played the game for a while, absolutely useless, he wouldn't listen to any advice he just wanted to do things his way, 120-130 every time. But I didn't mind playing with him, the reason being that he was totally aware of speed of play, he didn't take it too seriously but he knew others did,ok he took lots of shots but he did it quickly and he wouldn't take ages looking for a lost ball.

What gets me is when is when playing partners almost seem unaware of how slow they are playing, then start moaning that the group behind is rushing because they're constantly waiting on the tee behind.

if he was taking an unduly amount of time and holding up play or taking divots the size of hedgehogs,i'm afraid he would be in front of the greens committee post haste.I believe you should learn to play on a 9 hole or a muni not a manicured private club.

I remember routinely taking > 10 shots per hole when I first started, struggling to get the ball off the ground, chipping it repeatedly over greens.

My advantage was that I was very young so not having to deal with intolerance from other players..... just trying my Dad's patience to the limits, I fear!

We all start somewhere so a bit of understanding and encouragement would be better than trying to get him to quit. Admittedly, that's going to be difficult if you're struggling to maintain your composure in a medal round....

So a complete novice puts in three cards over 130 is he automatically entitled to a 28 H/C? Not in my book. A 28 H/C should be aquired when the novice is hitting 100 + or - 5.
It is quite wrong for a player to be allowed to enter a club qualifier if a score of 140 is the likely outcome.

i take exception to the suggestion that a muni isnt manicured!

My courses are in better nick than some private clubs i've played! :sbox:

How often does the club run stableford comps or is it always pure stroke play? I believe the best way to begin at golf is in formats other than stroke. Do they have team comps or anything running for some fun?

I play in societies so get to play a lot of courses under stableford format. The pressure is removed if I play badly a great way to get into the game.

Last year my club also had a introduction evening with 9 holes of team betterball. Again removed pressure but allowed the opportunity to play a variety of shots and gain experience and tips from better players. I hope to see more of this this year.

Maybe the question isn't when should he stop, it should be, what's the club doing to encourage players like this and help them improve?

Sorry but I disagree. Where is the lack of respect. I played with a guy the other month who didn't break 100 in the medal. You going to tell him after 20+ years it is disrespectful to the rest of the field. As long as the group are letting others through while they look for lost balls. How do you know what the playing partners thought of it all? They might have been encouraging him.

I can't see hpw you can tell anyone they don't deserve to be on a course. If he pays his money, abides by the dress code, adheres to the ettiquette and enjoys himself where is the issue. Who are you to say he should stick to pitch and putt or nine hole beginner courses. I will agree though the app has to go I think that has a bigger bearing on slow play than nobbling it 7 or 8 times to the green on every hole

All of last year I struggled around numerous courses, rarely getting anywhere 100. Remember one round totalling over150!
But everything is starting to click now, played to my hc twice last month and broke 100 finally a few weeks ago, and it was in the pissing rain and strong winds to boot. I think alot of new players try to play as well as their lower hc partners, instead of using their extra shots to their advantage.

Very unfair for any low hc player to suggest high hc'ers should jack it all in, everyone is better than someone at something, at some point ;)

Stupidly long pre shot routine... Talking too much... I have seen a few examples

We have one like that who joins us on a Saturday occasionally - god it's painful to watch and he is in his own little world. I would much rather play with the guy who has just been given his first handicap - took him 6 months from joining, as at our place will not give you one until you have achieved a standard that would mean you didn't feel out of your depth in a comp.
