Today I played at Garstang in a long arranged golf day, while I am glad it went ahead, the course was in awful condition, the was a mass of standing water on the fairways, the greens and the rough and most of the bunkers were flooded, when I pushed the trolley, water sprayed everywhere. I was practically impossible to find a dry spot to drop from standing water.
I am sure that had it been a private club the course would have been closed, but it was a Best Western hotel and golf course and they obviously rely of golf days and societies for their income, but should it be like that, shoudnt they consider the effect of paying on a course in such a state.

sounds stupid opeing that course andilo major harm to ts conditioning when it dries out - if there is standig water in more than a few areas I feel it should be shut. I don't enjoy playing at all when it in those coditions

As soon as damage is going to be done to the greens or there is standing water on more than one green.
Helped out at my home course last year with grass cutting, bunker raking etc and the hardest thing was keeping the greens in good condition when they got very wet and that's with them being built to PGA standards. A little more care by players would help the greenkeepers alot and would mean the course would be in better condition for everyone.

louise_a im surprised you managed to play at all at Garstang toda with the amount of rain thats been put down,it gets so wet even with light showers there.....at least ya did'nt av to wash ur trolley:D

the course should be closed once in the greenkeepers opinion it is detrimental to the course, yes it is frustrating for us but to keep the course open and cause it long term damage is not a good idea surely.
it sounds as if garstang was in no way playable today but the £££'s rolled in front of there eyes and they could see them washing down the drain with all the water.

Interesting that thoughts have been about the course so far... do any cubs have guidelines for closure written into their H&S policy based on safety of the golfers ?

Interesting, most courses shut themselves where ain is concerned, the minute there is standing water on any green then it should be shut IMO, our course tends to drain very well but we do have 2 greens which flood quicker than others. Neither have water just now but they will have shortly if this rain keeps up :(

During adverse weather trolleys should be banned.
Not because of wheel damage but because of footfall damage caused by the tracking of trolleys around greens.

With a bag there is a 360 degree entry and entrance to a green with a trolley the tracking is usually reduced to a couple of yards.
Shortest possible route, least line of resistance.

Condition is a matter for the greenkeeper alone and he should close when he considers damage will be done by playing...sadly the case all too often at present.

Hi matey
Yeh its ok,went up today and considering the crap weather its playing pretty well...
The course at present is being run by Serco, they aint done anything to the course or clubhouse as yet,i believe they have temp contract upto Nov then they have the option of taking it on a long term contract so hopefully if they do then will see money spent on the course...
Gizza shout when you want a knock and will get something sorted:thup:

Those pics are worrying. It is however a fine line. I'm not a fan of playing on a sodden course but I hate it when my course is shut.
