I have been in hospital for a couple of days ( to have my money belt removed according to my lovely wife) and in between the 5 star treatment (not) have had time to think and one thought was when did playing golf stop being fun was it when i started to play better and started to care if i didn't shoot under 100 or was it when i got blinkered into getting down to single figures or was it when i started to play in comps all over the place, don't get me wrong i still enjoy playing but not in a fun way like when i first started with a bunch of mates at the local muni it seems the more we take it seriously the less fun it becomes.

it got less fun for me when I realized that they let St Helensers play... It really took the exclusivity out of it..;)..
On a more serious note, golf is fun when you dont take it too seriously. It doesnt matter what you are playing, you still have to acknowledge that its a long walk, in beautiful (sometimes) surroundings, with good (sometimes) friends.. I scored 16 points at Longridge earlier in the year, and enjoyed every second of it....

I play golf with attitude of I do not make a living from this game it is there for fun. It is when I started to look at it like that that my handicap came down from 11 to 5. Never gonna make scratch and I know it as I do not practice and put enough effort into improving my weak areas of the the game. But do you know what I have some good mates and we all go out and have fun take the P@@@ out of each other constantly laugh when one of us hits a bad shot and just relax and have fun like we are sat in the pub. We never put each other off when playing a shot as that is just wrong and when playing competitions we be more serious but not totally. But when having a knock round for a few quid there is nothing wrong with telling your mate who's bad shot goes to the left about the out of bounds. Even better when he then goes and blocks it right....LOL

GO out and enjoy the game like you use to and you may find that you get better at it. Play to relax not to wind yourself up.

I'm not sure I have ever classed golf as particularly fun, for me it's more of a fascination. I'm driven by the persuit of lower scores, always have been and I suspect always will be.

It is always fun

I think about it before I play and after I play. I get frustrated and even annoyed but rarely dont love playing it

I have just had my winter league game cancelled 10 minutes ago as the opponents both have to work and I am deperately arranging a replacement game.

Finally, I am due to have an enforced break for an operation and I know I shall be desperate to play and will undoubtedly come back too soon

Its still fun for me - otherwise I woudnt play. One thing I have managed to do recently is to overcome the importance in my mind of the outcome, meaning that I play with less pressure and expectation.
My game has improved as a result of this, I believe.

For me its the banter with mates during and after the game. Yes, I love to post a good score and win the dosh off them but its things like "nice to see your short game's improving, or nice putt" after they've duffed a drive. The craic is just unreal, and I love it.

Even in my darkest moods it has always remained fun. OK probably not at the time but the pursuit of a handicap cut and the knoweldge that the next one will be "the one" keeps me coming back for more

I only play for fun.

I was thinking about this recently (as was considering a rangefinder for chrimbo). At the moment I've come to the conclusion that if I start going down that road it's almost like trying too hard and would remove some of the fun, relaxed attitude I have to playing golf. May change in the future but quite happy the way I approach it at the moment.

As someone who takes everything I do "a bit too seriously" according to my Missus, I can assure you that Golf is the only thing that, as soon as I put the clubs back in my front room, i'm already looking forward to the next trip to the course. The next chance to beat our 2nd hole. The next chance to drive our 11th. The next chance to knock a 7 iron stone dead in front of a patio full of people on our 18th. I love it. I'm thinking about it now. I'm looking forward to my kids playing with me in a few years. I'm still thinking about it....... I may have a problem..

FUN are you insane? Where in the rules of golf does it mention fun. What's funny about 4 putting every hole, whats funny about driving OOBs, what's funny about thinning, shanking, comming over the top, swinging out to in, duffing, fat shots, losing your balls, getting stung in the rough, air shots and watching your only good strike of the day take a wicked bounce into a leaf filled 6ft ditch.
Some of you guys need some serious counseling, thats not fun thats a test of survival, I'm only putting myself through it because I'm trying to get myself fit enough to join the Brownies.

I don't play golf because it's "fun", but because I get so much enjoyment out of the challenge of becoming a better golfer (dispite many moments of frustration). It's that will to improve that keeps me coming back.
I can't speak for other clubs, but certainly at mine there is such a mix of friendly and funny characters that you play with (and have a few jars with), that you can't fail to enjoy yourself.
Even many of the characters on this forum (who I've never had the pleasure to meet) make me smile with some of their opinions or witty comments, just adding to the enjoyment of the game
....................Oh. Alright then, so maybe golf is fun !!!!
