What's wrong with changing shoes in a car park?

Always change shoes at my car...I have a locker for life but don't use it as I never, ever leave my clubs in it.

I always go into the clubhouse and spend cash too.

I also have never, ever been to a club where there is such a 'rule' and if clubs do have such a rule they need to take a good, long, hard look at themselves.

If it's about mud from shoes in the car park. What about trolleys? Do they not deposit mud in the car park?

I don't see any comparison between slipping on a pair of shoes in the car park and getting changed for swimming in a car park though. Hardly comparable.

As a windsurfer, it was quite common for us to get changed on the pavement or car park of our favourite venues. So a pair of shoes is hardly a 'biggie'.

Having said that, I can understand why some of the more traditional members only clubs would have a ruling on this. But a combined members and p&p, a bit ott.

Do these clubs that do have a no changing shoes in the car park rule have urinals in the gents? If it's offensive to have ones socks on display, then surely ones todger shouldn't be out for all to see!!!!!!

Our club's got no problem with it, but then again, they also don't really encourage you to go in there and spend money. They kept the club shop closed for 6 weeks or so while they relocated it downstairs - how many clubs can afford to do that really?

Their take on it? "We don't need the money."

I don't have a huge issue with it either way. I like the idea that it goes back to metal spikes and there may be something in that but in this day and age we are trying to make the game more accessible and not return to the dark draconinan petty rules that use to put so many off. Its a 30 secon dthing anyway so not likely to make a huge difference.

On the flip side though we do have a number of car park jockeys who would probably have to ask directions if they ever ventured inside the clubhouse. Always out early and never ever use the facilities afterwards and I guess its these members its aimed at. They just flout the rule (who is going to enforce it anyway) and carry on regardless

I'd be very surprised if it were really to encourage people to go into the clubhouse to spend money.

Beau have this rule. When we go there in a couple of weeks I won't be carrying my golf shoes around with me all evening. It's back to the car for them which (if I wasn't stopping anyway) would make me more inclined to think 'I'm not walking backwards and forwards twice just so I can have a drink.'

I normally change my shoes in the car park while I'm putting the rest of my gear in the car, then walk to the clubhouse.

Arrive at course
Walk to clubhouse
Change shoes
Back to car
Get clubs and trolley out
Play golf

Finish golf
Put clubs and trolley in car
Walk to clubhouse
Change shoes
Walk back to car to put shoes in the boot
Walk back to clubhouse

Nah.

I don't see the big deal either. What if I don't have a locker or space in my bag for my shoes. Go to the clubhouse to change into golf shoes, carry my clubs to the car park to put my shoes in a mates car then carry them back round to the tee. It's not much but it's completely avoidable.

Plus I'll already have spent 10 minutes setting my trolley up and sorting all my other crap out in the car park, a minute to throw my feet into different shoes won't make a difference. I wear soft spikes so they won't damage the rock solid Tarmac that has umpteen tonnes of metal already parked on it. And if I club doesn't have shoe cleaning facilities then I'll clean them at home instead of battering them together to shake the mud off. However, any club that hasn't even bothered with shoe brushes wouldnt be too fussed about changing shoes in the car park I'd imagine.

A friend of mine at my old club turned up for a game one Saturday lunchtime. Parked up, assembled his trolly and bag and parked it near the pro shop while he went in to change his shoes.
2 mins later, he came out and all his gear had gone.
He changes his shoes in the car park now

I have once seen the ultimate.

along with the 'Visitor's Car Park' sign pointing to the back of beyond, you were greeted on arrival with 'No Changing Shoes in the Car Park', and several other 'No' signs.

After your trek to the clubhouse you were greeted with a codelock on all the changing room doors and on your return from the course at the only entrance to said changing rooms 'No spikes past this point'.

wow, thanks for so many opinions. I was just getting worried in case I just wasn't posh enough to carry on playing golf really.

I'd assume that my gaff (and others) would rather keep the dirt outside instead of inside as there is no rule about changing in the car park. However, if they insist on me getting their carpets all covered in sh1te then I'm more than happy to oblige.

More fool them.

So are you saying we CAN or CAN'T change our shoes in the car park at Beau in a few weeks?

Aztec, changing in the car park is a big NO at beau. There is a large locker/changing room avaliable, this is accessable from the rear of the club by the putting green.
