Whats the secret to good driving?

The driver is unique in the bag.
With every other club in the bag, if you want to hit it further, you just change clubs
So if you want to hit it further with a 6 iron, you just change to a 5.
With the driver, you can't club up. If you want to hit it further, you have to hit it harder
And harder.
And harder.

With the rest of your clubs, you'll probably have a good idea how far you hit them
I suggest you do the same with the driver.
Learn how to hit it a consistent distance and groove that distance. Dont try and hit it any further.
When you can hit it 250 consistently straightish, be happy with that and dont try and squeeze an extra 20 metres out of it on the par 5s.
It may/will get boring popping it down the middle every time but you will take less 7s and 8s and will probably get more birdies on those par 5s by hitting more fairways.

That actually makes a lot of sense Bob......Its been said to me that i swing the driver a bit quicker than my 3 wood and i suppose that's what knocks everything out of sync......

One question......I can feel the head of my 3 wood the whole way through my swing......But i can never feel where the driver is....Its obviously lighter but is there a way around this feels.....If i could get a driver that felt head heavy like my 3 wood i think i might be able to hit it better.

You might have the wrong shaft in your driver. You really need to know where your club is, so you know when to release it. IMO

Or some lead tape

How much Bob....Is it jsut a case of putting it on until i can feel the difference......And does it have an effect on ball flight if i dont put it in the right place.........

Im hitting it all over the place at the moment so i dont think it would matter where i put the tape...

I am a very inconsistent driver of the ball but these days I'm teeing it up high and just focussing on making a solid swing without too many moving parts. In the past I've chucked the kitchen sink at it withthe obvious results. I know I am not long and accept that and so Ive given up trying to bash it out there. I'll settle for 235-240 off the fairway every time.

According SS2 I'm hitting 46% of FIR's which is only one off my handicap level. I'll take that at the moment and hope to build on it. If I was the OP and I was struggling, wouldn't a single lesson on the driver be the way forward? It has a unique address position and there may be one or two small issues culminating in the poor shots. Its the way I'd do it

Just do it by feel.
Put on some electical tape on to the back of the driver first and apply the lead tape to the tape. That way, you wont have a problem peeling it off if you change your mind.

And go small. A couple of grams makes a huge difference. Adding a few inches of lead tape makes your driver a pile driver!

I'd concentrate on 2 things really to keep it simple.

1) Tempo
2) Keep your eye on the ball through impact.

The majority of bad drives are caused by people trying to thrash the ball in an effort to gain distance and this invariably leads to people spinning out of the shot and cutting across the ball. Make sure you are still looking down at the ball through impact and concentrate on hitting the ball WELL rather than hitting it HARD.

This is what I concentrate all the time. I bet most poor drivers of the ball don't see their clubhead sweep the ball away. Most top players when asking the secret of "nailing" the drive when they want to hit a long one, say, that they swing slower. That, for me, is the idea

+1 from me, struggled over the winter with driving, result was I was a) over swinging b) trying to knock it into next week.

So smoothed swing out steady and keep eye on ball, accelerate through impact to full finish. Also only take about a 3/4 back swing. As bob said they ate not 300 yds but a good 230-250 and on the fairway. Also like the razr hawk as head is a bit heavier and can feel where the head is, which is strange as its advertised as being lighter!
