Whats the secret to good driving?

Ok im at the point now where its the one area of my game that i cant seem to get my head round.....
Today i left it in the bag for all but 3 holes...They were Par 5's......Of the 3 drives i would consider 1 of them to be average at best.
One was a was a hook that started to look promising but it dipped all of a sudden about 135 mtrs into its flight and ran for ages..Nearly into the clagg..... Funnily i hit a 3 wood and then a 50mtr SW to 3 feet and walked off with a tweetie.


Its the one club that i cant get confident over.....And to be fair im now at the point where i think that its half the club not being forgiving enough and half me.

I hate just bashing balls at the range with the thing as i dont want to fall into the norm that i see week in week out there...
Im happy hitting my wedges and getting them right.....Or is this my problem.

Not that i pretend to be a good driver of the ball, (although i wasn't too bad on friday) but i find that slow and steady wins the race, that seems to build confidence which can only improve things.

i have always had problems with drivers up until recently, just swing slow to start, then imagine the ball isn't there, and make sure you follow through properly, thats what has been working with me

Yes Bob.....Its what i cant figure out.....One shot with a 3 wood today for me into a very strong head wind on a par 4 off the tee carried for 225 mtrs..It left me exactly 150 mtrs to the pin..Dont ask me how but it cut straight through the wind.....

Exactly what i was going to say. You see some people trying to lether one up the fairway, i stand on the tee with my wee 3 wood, swing within myself and low and behold, i am further than them. Ouch..... Its all in the timing. Once your in the zone, its easy.

I cant hit them. So i don't, i use a 3 wood.

But the point is ....Ok they are not a necessity but you can really take advantage of holes if you drive the ball well.....

I dont want people to think that its an Ego thing with me....Its far from it....More often than not im pretty accurate with the 3 wood....But getting a good drive away on a par 5 if its reachable in 2 can give you a good scoring opportunity.

the problem is going to be that you have taken the driver out to achieve more than you know you can with your 3 wood - whilst this is an excellent strategy for a player who is equally confident with either club we all know this isn't your situation

you need to make friends with your driver if you are going to use it - taking it out in such situations isn't going to help.

They are the first holes that you start loosing shots off of as your handicap starts dropping.

Horses and courses and all that.

After all, its one of the hardest clubs in your bag to hit.

It sounds like my kind of course to be honest!
When it comes to driving I find that if I hold back on myself I am more likely to make some sort of mistake ie a pull but if I swing straight and true then I'll get a nice straight ball flight

After all, its one of the hardest clubs in your bag to hit.

Don't know if it is just because I grew up hitting a persimmon headed driver the size of a large pea but I find these new 460 beasts one of the easiest clubs to hit so long as you maintain your rhythm and don't try to welly it. I find I drive best when I feel my arms and body are staying "connected" and I'm not letting my body get ahead of my hands.

I'm not a long driver but I do find the fairway fairly consistently and not being long it is helpful to have the extra 20 -30 yards I get from my driver over my 3 wood.
