I'm just looking round some websites at membership prices and I've just seen one that if I were 19-24 it would be £336 but as I'm 25 its £684!

Lots of clubs offer a similar thing. Its to try and bring in new younger members. If you look around you'll see some clubs do it up to 30.

They may have a reduced rate like you see up to 24 and then the rate is stepped from this to the full rate over the next few years.

It is about encouraging younger members into the club so it doesn't die when the old fogeys shuffle off. It is quite common to have a sliding scale of fees for younger members, often up to age 29. This is because in theory they earn less, and often have young famillies to support. It tends not to happen if the waiting list is full, but is an enticement to get people in, who may subsequently support the club for a long time.

It is tough if you fall outside this age group, but then I am 43, so I do too.

They presume you earn a certain amount between 21-24 so can afford one thing and then presume you earn X amount after you are X old. Its a poor system really, yes it might encourage younger players but it also discourages 30 somethings wanting to pay more than someone a couple of years younger, swings and roundabouts my friend.

Im a member at Bedale GC and we have reduced rates right the way up to 35, you only pay full fees when you are 36 and older! So at 23 have 12 years at reduced rates, GREAT SUCCESS!! They did this though as there are only 8 members at our club aged between 21 - 30 so wouldn't cost the club massively and would hopefully bring in new members?! They also introduced paying by direct debit over 10 months which helps me massively!!

Bedale... I am from Richmond and used to play as a kid at Richmond course, they where a tad snobby for me so gave golf up until last year.

I've met my first "Local" on the forum! Least I know now if I mension a course, theres someone who might of played it!!

I've only played Richmond twice, the second time put me off because I had some members playing behind me and a mate who kept trying to play through even though we weren't slow at all (Took 3 and a half to get round). Then when we got in the bar they fired abuse at us saying we shouldn't be allowed on the course because of our slow play?! Rediculous!

I know they put me off golf for 18 years, but I heard Catterick is a lot better, my mams cousin used to be captain there for a number of times and has spent what must be 30+ years playing there, I've not played there yet but I am learning to drive in Jan and so in the summer the golfing world here I come...

If you get chance, when you pass your test, go and play Masham GC. Its 10 minutes up the round from where I live and is a course that not many know about and its absolutley fantastic! If I didn't enjoy my golf at Bedale so much then i'd be a member there! Its a 9 hole course but its awesome! It will cost you about £20 but i've played courses in the top 100 that don't even compare to Masham! Sounds stupid but its true! And its never too busy so getting on not a problem!

They have two claims to fame. The first one is Winston Churchill used to play there when he came up every summer to visit the earl of Swinton (The castle is about 2 minutes further up the road). The second is Bing Crosby wrote in their visitor book that it was the best 9 holes he had ever played, apart from some yob found out about the book and stole it!

If anyone gets chance to play golf in North Yorkshire, play Masham...and Bedale obviously!!

A lot of clubs have sliding scales and although I understand the concept of encouraging new and younger members who will hopefully stay and become the driving force of the club for years to come it is a flawed concept nowadays as a lot of people seem to only be joining a club for a short number of years and then moving on. This might be throygh work, leaving the game or having more money and moving to bigger more expensive clubs. Whatever the reason I think it is a unfair system and penalises a lot of older (30-60) golfers who are looking for their first club having taken the game up, or to move from their current course. With joining fees to contend with as well it feels as if that price bracket is being seen as easy prey, especially when the over 60's at a lot of clubs also start feeling the benefits of discounted rates.

I wish they had that sort of system in my area as i only 25 and pay full fees and does the girlfriend who is 24 they would not let us join as a 'couple' which i didnt like but hey ho,i going to change clubs next year work permitting to a clubs which is so friendly the welcome i got was fantastic the joining fee is £250 however whenever i play if i keep my temp bag tags it will all come off the fee,the course never gets wet which is very rare in my area

whats all that about!

It's age discrimination and it's against the law.
