As a new user of the Forum I would be interested to hear how people were introduced to the game.

My first game (Loose description as I could hardly say I played)was on a sand course in Abu Dhabi - way before the delights of the current courses there. Greens were actually called 'Browns' and you played from a piece of astroturf you carried round in 40 degree heat.

My grandad taking me on the beach in st andrews with cut down clubs.

Used to go putting on the himalayas and watch people play the 18th st the old course.

Mine was on a pitch'n'putt with moulded rubber shoes and one cotton glove that me and my old man were wearing as we had seen them with gloves on one hand in the books LOL.

Almost put me off for life

Hitting golf balls at the horses in the field along from the house!

A group of 6 early teens having a group lesson, all our dads were member of the same club, Aspley Guise, my brother was the only worse player than I was. :D
We then used to spend all summer hols at the club playing 36 holes a day. :p
The 1st hole of the 9 hole course (now the 10th after 9 more were added) so it had to be played twice, is about 160yds over a large approx 130 yd carry full of ferns and silver birch. It was featured as a “card wrecker” in one of the mags a few years ago. :(
Approximate dates 1974, Happy days. :D ;)

Local playing fields with a hickory shafted 8 iron that looked about as lofted as todays wedges. The sole was thinner than a lot of todays toplines but I knew no better.

All I wanted to do was to 'hit it in the air' every time.

A wee while ago when I had hair :)

Ha bobmac looks like a young sting or bruce willis...

No?

My first memories is hitting one ball at a range one october, when aged 12, I topped it about 20 yards and thought "what a stupid game"

Four months later I was down a 9 holer hacking round and thinking it wasn't so bad. By that summer I had been given some clubs and had a 3 month junior summer membership at a local 18 hole course. At my friends house we would practice hitting persimmon woods down a hill in the opposite field, the farmer was a golf fan and he didn't mind at all.

I played every summer for about 5 months until I was about 15 then hardly played more than 10 rounds a year till I was 24!

Aged 10 on a very windy day at Cleethorpes golf club - Dad was a member there and thought a lesson would get my interest going. Nearly got blown away so stayed away for a few years!

Now an 'all weather' golfer.....honest

My dad made me a wee iron at work, was just like a little wedge, got it when I was 5/6, only really hit it in the near by field, and never really got the bug, until 20 years later... :)

Keswick pitch and putt every summer in the mid - late 80's whilst on holiday there, loved it just coudn't afford my then local club's (york GC) prices for a junior. Taken up properly 10 years ago and still never played York!

I had a go at topgolf with my friend and loved it every since! my first round was on a little pitch and putt where the longest hole was a whole 150 yards long!

mine was getting up and teeing off with my dad an mate every sunday at 5 am summertime and walking behind them just hitting my iron all the way round used to love going

Found a broken 5 iron in a field in port talbot while staying with relatives. Got it home dad got it welded and then dug a hole in the garden and that was that.
Gave it up when i was 16 to play stupid football then got back into it at the age of 34.
My god i wish i could get those years back and have played all the way through.

:(

9 Holer as was (18 now) at Whetstone in Leicestershire.
A hired "set" of half a dozen clubs carried round in a length of firemans hose with the end sewn up, I think I scored about 155 for twice round, hooked.
