As most of you know I have recently joined Spalding Golf Club and have handed in my 3 cards and have been given my first official club handicap.

I am not a bad golfer in general. Strike the ball pretty well, hit it a fair distance and am usually round between 75 and 85. Bad days come in at around 90. Fairly consistent even with a poor short game. Used to play off a 9 from my golfshake rounds.

Now back to the 3 cards. Well I played badly - really badly. Shanks and slices causing me no end of grief on a course where you have to plot your way around. Missing the fairways adds a shot to the hole because you invariably have to play out sideways. Coupled with some horrendous putting means that I signed for 3 HORROR SHOWS at 102, 99 and 96.

Been allocated a 25. TWENTY FIVE!!!!

I want to play in club competitions but I fear that 25 puts me in the 'El Bandito Grande' category.

Played with a mate on Sunday and knocked it round in 92 which would have given me 42 points. my game is not far off coming back - spent some time on the range - and if I play 'normally' I am in danger of 50 odd points.

What would you do?

Not enter comps and just put in some sup cards to bring it down?
Just play off 25 and see what happens?

Really in a pickle here.

Don't you carry a handicap from your previous club?

You've got a huge range of scores when playing casual games, and you 3 counting scores are all well over that again.

You'll be in a cat where people are expected to have some low scores and move out of the cat quickly if good enough.

Just go play and put in the scores - you may be surprised to find you have found your (initial) level and it's a good starting point for improving.

have a word with the handicap sec, play some supps but if thats what you got, thats what you got! win a few comps and you will soon get a chop!

If you are really confident you will play significantly better, then could you not put your handicap on your card down as something like 15? Then you will be in no danger of getting 50 points for the sake of the competition, but it would still allow you to bring the handicap down officially. (If my understanding is correct and the handicap system ignores whatever handicap you put on the card)

never had an official handicap. just kept my own handicap using golf shake. I never played Oulton much in Leeds. Ended using the points for the wife to go tot he spa

Handicap has to start somewhere, you got what you got from your three cards, play on in my opinion.

Thought about this bit will only bring the handicap down in small bits. I want it to come I as quickly as possible.

I would guess then that you are not as good as you think you are and not bee putting the right scores down on milkshake:rofl:

If your better than that you can prove it by entering competitions and using supplementaries, forget what they will say this is your first proper handicap, it's a different kettle of fish to a fun muck about with some sticks and a ball.
There are plenty of tools within the system for you to get adjusted. I would play the course a bit more learn the lay of the land and then go for it....

Hit the range? ;)

Only kidding - a quiet word with the handicap secretary to share your concerns and maybe a supplementary or two if you're certain they'll rectify the situation!

Play the first comp off your new h'cap. If you blitz it, ask for a massive cut. If you post near to your h'cap, just accept it and carry on working at your game.

share your concerns with the handicap secretary, Arrange to have a game with him and see what he advises , either way you have done your best to rectify the situation ..

surely everyone else here is missing the point, finally we've got someone who has a chance to win next years Trilby Tour :)

I say 3 club comps between now and May, couple of buffers and a 0.1 be fine, then plenty of practise ahead of your regional qualifier :D

That or what everyone else said ;)
