What not to wear.

What an absolute load of old tosh - you are all (bar one or two) like the old sorts you all used to moan about who inhabited your own clubs. There is NO logic , sense or rationalism on any sort of dress code other than your own cliquey sad opinions of what is "smart"

The fashion industry changes every year, yet the stupid masses of golfers in the UK seem to think that polo shirts, chinos, and white shoes are "classy" or "smart".

Go to France or Italy and play golf. Both of those countries exude "class" in dress sense, but in both countries you will see Jeans (!!!) on golf courses, ankle socks, tee shirts etc.

What on earth is a collar for other than to put a tie under for God's sake, so why do you have them on Polo Shirts ?

And what on earth difference does it make if your shirt is tucked in or not ???

Tiger plays without collars, Couples wears trainers, and caddies wear shorts !!!

Puerile rubbish.

Grow up, concentrate on your golf and being pleasant to your partners and stop this stupid drivel about "smart dress sense"

No wonder people laught about golfers and their dress sense - you lot just promulgate it

Could not give a sh1t what they wear in France and Italy i do not play there!!

Each course has it`s own dress code if you can not abide by it DON`T play it, simple! Don`t play it then whinge about it later.
What really bugs me is that it is not about the "cost" as we all know about the cost of a football replica shirt and most pairs of jeans, to me it is about a "sh1t attidude", an attidude that will do more harm to golf in the long run, than people wanting to respect a certain part of the game.

As some will know, we had our golf day earlier in the week. We played the Willow Valley course in Brighouse, West Yorkshire.
Those that know it will be aware that it is a quality USPGA designed course and hosts the Yorkshire PGA Championship.

As is the norm, we all turned up in smart golf attire (polos, sweaters, trousers and golf shoes)
As our round progressed I, along with others were very surprised to find some other people playing the course in various states of dress. One guy (I swear he was wearing trainers) was playing in camo cargo shorts. His partner was sporting similar shorts.

Don't get me wrong. I am in no way a golf snob. I'm not the type to request someone tucks their shirt in!
I do however, feel that a course, such as the one we played deserved the proper attire as etiquette dictates.

I blame the guys in the pro shop who take the money. Obviously, the folding stuff means more than proper golf attire.

Any thoughts?

Im with you Basher, you obviously felt you were playing a top course, and you gave it the respect it deserved by dressing smart.
I always try to look smart when i play, even when i wear shorts[if its really hot.
Our course is a Municipal and it also seams, money comes before appearance.
You wouldnt believe some of the sights you get on our course.Theres nothing wrong with standards.

I seem to have stirred up a right old hornets nest.

I see going for a game of golf as an event. I play at a members club. Visitors are made welcome but MUST adhere to the dress code. No trainers, no jeans etc. Anyone not conforming with the dress code would simply not get on. No snobbery involved, just abiding by the rules.

To me it's normal golf attire. A club local to me is stuck in the stone age with regard to it's dress code, especially considering if you wish to play in shorts, they MUST be worn with KNEE LENGTH SOCKS!!! Nice!!! :D

I don't see Wayne Rooney playing for man u in cargo's and a tee shirt. He wears footy kit, as prescribed by the club. He isn't short of a bob or two, but chooses to abide by a dress code laid down by others.

When he plays golf (and he does, I have seen him), he wears golf kit. Polo, tailored trousers, golf shoes, etc.

It is a sport, with a recognised dress code, it won't change any time soon. If you want to play the game, wear the clothes. If you want to wear jeans and a wife beater, go play poker.

In fairness, I dont think one person on here has advocated playing in jeans and a wife beater, so I dont see why you made that up to prove a point?
I think the general concensus is that many people are way too precious about the attire required for golf. This thread seems to back that up somewhat.

There is nothing wrong with shorts with pockets on the side, nothing wrong at all. They are just as smart as ones without. Not all of course, but then not all shorts without pockets are smart either.

As for members clubs, yes, absolutely. I am a member, so it is MY club. Therefore I have a say in what I wear. I will wear shorts with pockets and a polo shirt, ankle socks and golf shoes. All very respectable and fine.

Its 2011 now, NOT 1920, times have changed, and thankfully, many golf clubs are too. Long may it continue.

I am way too busy playing golf on a golf course to worry about what other people are wearing. Seen plenty of club throwers in smart dress and these people should be banned from all golf courses. I sign up to the whole polo shirt and trousers attire but I won't been seen dead in this get up off the course. Only golfers (me included) could get away with wearing a baseball cap with trousers.

Seems to me that a lot of people want to wear just what they like, and either don't bother to find out, or ignore what the golf club they are playing at will accept. Fine, wear what you like, but don't bleat on when you are refused onto the course.

I've got to admit to having splinters in my arse on this subject.I'm all for "standards" on the course, but 60 year olds, and 20 year olds, are very unlikely to have similar tastes.
I think all golfers should be clean, tidy, and well presented, but as i've already said, its unfair that somebody should be questioned about what they are wearing, rather than there overall appearance, with regards to being "smartly dressed".
What is "recognised golf clothing" ?

Standards. I keep hearing that word related more often to what people wear rather than how they act. Most of the courses I have played pay no attention to slow play or club throwers but are quick to pull somebody up on what colur socks they are wearing. I don 't mind the whole dress code thing but it comes way down on my list of "standards" golfers should adhere to.

Problem is,a lot of narrow minded sorts, seem to think you can tell what sort of person somebody is, by how they dress ?
Theres a club near me,where if you ask for peanuts or crisps with your pint, they open the packet, and tip them into a bowl, before handing them to you !

Not quite narrow minded, just experience.

Out of interest, what are you thoughts on this lad?

I know it is getting late, but what does peanuts in a bowl, have to do with judging you on the way you dress :D :D

Im all for sticking by club rules regarding to what attire to wear. My club does not state that I cannot wear fancy dress when playing. Does yours? This means I could turn up in a complete clowns outfit or as fred flinstone and wouldnt be breaking the rules, or even turn up in a bright pink hawaiin shirt.

Surely you would rather see someone in combat shorts that fit the bill than something mentioned in the above?

Surely your club tells you what you can wear. For example, a collared shirt and trousers/shorts. I bet it also says you must wear proper golf shoes, there go the clown shoes then, ah well.

Could always get shoes spiked hah. But the point of the question was if I am sticking to the rules theres not much that can be said. If I turned up wearing a bright red wig or a Hawaiin shirt that was bright pint, tucked in of course with some nice John Daly trousers I will look a plank but I have stuck to the golfing attire?

Are you a member at my club? I'm sure I've seen that outfit stalking our fairways. lol. If I had my way it'd be black and white attire only, and no highlights in your hair!

Like you say, as long as you abide by the club rules then all is well in the world. Unfortunately, people don't.

Nah not a member at your club I am sure we would of met while I was in the rough looking for my ball waving people through hah.

not much rough at our place, just sodding trees!

Well it must be bedtime if I'm going to be up for 7 to go play. I look forward to carrying this on tomorrow.
