What is the point of the paper counterpart of the driving license?

You are supposed to use both bits according to UKB, the photo Id bit is quite easy to forge, but the paper bit isn't so if they are sus of you and you were using that. they ask for the paper bit as back up.

Like others I have often used my driving licence as ID for domestic flights (Flybe & Easyjet) and have never been asked for the paper part. My ID is only ever checked by the airline staff as there's no need to pass through Border Control. On flights to other EU countries foreign nationals seem to be able to travel on their national ID cards without any issues when passing through UK Border Control.

Things that I have learnt in the last few days...

1) Photo DL has to be renewed every 10 years. I was part of the 2.6m who were unaware - I thought mine was valid till 2045 or similar as stated at the back of the license. I only came to know about it when I tried to change the address.

2) The paper bit is still pointless to me, being replaced in June. But as I applied for renewal, I will have to get one. Mine is declared lost, so i need to pay £14 for 5 months of privilege

3) You need to replace your photo when you renew it.

4) The best way is to do it online. If you have a UK passport and are renewing the DL online, then it will pick up your photo and signature from your passport!!!! So now your passport photo will be part of the most forged doc.

5) Took me 3 days to collect the docs for the application, 15 mins to fill out the online form. Apparently I will get it in a week or so.

6) Change of address & renewal is mandatory.. else £1000 fine.

7) Costs about 14 quid (incl the paper renewal)

8) Submitted my application yesterday, the pothole on our road was filled this morning!!!

From my perspective they are a necessity at the moment. We need the counterpart and the photocard for ID purposes for new applicants when doing a disclosure barring service check at the hospital

Do you... (I might be wrong), but when I did my CRB etc a few years ago, I dont think I had to use my DL... the passport was enuf to do it...

We need either two photographic (passport and D/L inc counterpart) and 1 x proof of address or one photographic proof (passport - doulbes as right to work for NHS Safer recruiting use) and 2 x proof of home address. For the DBS (formerly CRB) online you can use some other ID (full birth certificate, marriage certificate etc) but as I say the NHS Safer recruiting rules are different to DBS
