As the thread says.. What is the point of the paper counterpart of the driving license?. I have kept it safely enough and can never find it when I need it e.g. hiring a car but never use it otherwise. Now that I need to renew it, I just cant find it anywhere. I blame the movers. But is there any need for the paper counter part?

It possibly has loads of 'essential' info on it - convictions/fixed penalties etc - that can't be put on the piece of plastic!

An e-card should solve it.... The passport has gone that way..

Passports have to be renewed every now and then, so 'new technology' can be introduced as required, albeit staggered.

Driving Licenses don't have to be renewed - the pre 1989 ones are still valid. Can you imagine the absolute chaos on loads of 'systems' (including postage) that replacing cards would involve? This way - access to DVLA data by authorised bodies - at least there's no need for cards to be replaced. And DVLA can actually charge for the access too!

The decision to abolish the counterpart was as a result of the government’s Red Tape Challenge consultation on road transportation. It also aligns to DVLA’s Strategic Plan which includes commitment to simplifying our services.

So that'll mean a cheaper License renewel then yes?

Photocard licences have to be renewed every 10 years.

i'd heard that the Photo section of the DL is one of the most forged documents around, but the paper bit is harder to forge, hence when you use the photo section ad ID for a domestic internal flight, you have to use the paper section as part of it.

Last time I flew to EDI i wasnt asked for any ID at all. In either direction, that was with Easyjet.
BA from City didnt ask either.

Ryan air expect a passport for all flights domestic included!

did you not go though one of the Photo recognition devices ?

I have to fly quite regularly and i get away with my HIAL security pass, but always take the DL (both bits) just in case, you never know when you will get someone from UK B who wants to check the lot;)

I need to find mine as my wifes insurer needs it (I'm a named driver).... can't find it anywhere so think i'mgonna have to pay for a replacement, only for it to become uselesss in 5 months time!

Wow! Something I hadn't realised!

Though I'm apparently not alone - some 2.6 million Drivers haven't renewed theirs according to figures I've seen!

It's a legal requirement to notify change of address and DVLA will then notify you when the photo needs renewal.

However.....I had mine stolen (burglary) and replaced it (at a cost of £21 at the time). Six weeks later I had a letter saying it needed to be replaced as photo was 10 years old......another £21......so much for joined up governement!! I was not best pleased with the "service"!!

I've used my photo card part as ID a few times on internal flights but never used the paper bit. Surely the paper bit it pointless as it does not have a photo on it, therefore defeating the object as it being used as a means of identification?

You are supposed to use both bits according to UKB, the photo Id bit is quite easy to forge, but the paper bit isn't so if they are sus of you and you were using that. they ask for the paper bit as back up.

Get it done then - I think it's a £1000 fine.....

Mind you, fining all those 2.6 million drivers would fund a whole lot of road repairs!

The only time i have needed the paper part was when hiring a car.
