Well I have only gone and bought a Cobra long tom! Way I see it is if I can control it when I play comps with the standard 45" driver will be a breeze.
Going to do a driver build with a heavier shaft for more control, probably a v2 75r with a low spin head 9.5 loft

A 28 handicapper at our club has a Cobra Long Tom driver and belts the ball miles down the middle every time, but a shame about the rest of his golf. So it can't be that hard to use! He is quite a small guy btw. :D

Most would hit it farther with a shorter shaft. Why use a shaft that is 2 inches longer than the average used by Tour Pros?

I beg to differ on that one, just check the reviews, longer but less control, anyhow thought pro average was 44.5"
Most of the premium drivers you can buy these days have shafts that are 45 to 46" long as standard. Although I am only averagely tall, I quite like long shafts as they almost force you to swing smoothly. You can always grip down an inch or two if you find them a problem.

The Long Tom has a standard 48" shaft. Just because the shaft is longer doesn't mean you will hit it longer, off centre hits lose you a lot of distance.

Thing is it has a shorty grip so you can't grip down, against my g15 at Celtic manor range yesterday it was comfortably 20 yards further,I find a more rounded aggressive swing works well with it.Still don't know if i will have the balls to play it in a comp though.

Why buy a longer driver if you're going to grip down anyway? :)

I bought a long tom late last year when my R1 started misbehaving. It may just be a confidence thing but I find it more accurate and when hit well its longer than anything else I have ever hit, its also incredibly light for that much club.
