What film have you seen that you absolutely must tell someone about?

I can't believe how many of you are only listing American/hollywood movies. There are some amazing foreign movies out there, you guys should check them out (if you haven't already)! You're missing out!

yes agreed, I saw some seriously good WW11 Dutch and French resistance movies, you get used to the subtitles, sat all the way thru das boat as well. Theres a number of oustanding Japanese and Koren movies as well but I cant remember their names

Plenty of really good UK film makers that get overlooked also...

Big fan of the work of Ken Loach myself...

If you like sports films I would recommend;

The Express (the story of Ernie Davis)
Friday Night Lights (the film not the programme)
Glory Road
Moneyball
We are Marshall
Finding Forrester
Rudy

For non-sports films
Gangster Squad
Flight
Argo

A Beautiful Mind
Shane
Paths of Glory
Lawrence of Arabia
Dancing with Wolves
Waterloo
Das Boot
The Reader
Schindler's List
Apocalypse Now
Chariots of Fire

Not a film but Band of Brothers is an absolutely fantastic mini series that I rave about to everyone! If you haven't seen it yet, buy the boxset ASAP! Possibly the best bit of entertainment I've ever seen. The story, the characters, the soundtrack, the acting, and the emotion of it all is pure brilliance.

Friday night lights the programme is an absolute must watch if you haven't seen it

Only film I can ever remember queuing to see was The Sting. Jaws on the big screen wasn't bad.

Probably my favourite film at the cinema was Midnight Express.

I have seent the first 2 or 3 but I can't watch it.
It's like watching a film after reading the book, never as good. (I am saying that the film is the book and the programme is the film, hopefully you are still with me).

Blueray, surround-sound, takeaway, beers, entire box set. Perfect.

Best TV show ever.

I agree this is very good but I recently watched all the complete set of The Wire.... now thats a box set to get.. After the first episode I had to switch on the sub titles as the Baltimore lingo is harsh but most of the main actors are English!! Awesome

One that slips under the radar and is vastly underrated is Arlington Road

What a film - Tim Robbins (personally think quite an underrated actor) plays the bad guy perfectly just suspicious enough to make you doubt him!

Was hugely impressed by Hanks' performance in Captain Phillips (especially the final scenes) too although apparently there was plenty of creative licence used with the character!

Man, it would take me days to respond to this properly so I'll just name a recent one that isn't immediately obvious/mentioned above in case anyones thinking of renting something good this weekend

Headhunters

Norwegian thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, great show but be warned you have to be able to read.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the matrix. When this came out it blew me away. Totally different to any thing i had seen before.

It's one of the 20 or so films I mention when coming up with a top 5 list:

Godfather 1 & 2 combined (I had a boxset which was chronological rather than followed the 2 film's original editing ie started in Sicily when the Don was young)
Star Wars & Empire Strikes Back
Wayne's World
Matrix
Apocalypse Now
On the Waterfront
Infernal Affairs
Casablanca
Maltese Falcon
The Cavalry Trilogy (Johns Ford & Wayne)
Anchorman
Life Of Brian
etc etc etc
