Interested in what other clubs do in regards to social activities that work well that get lots members involved.
things tried are trips to wentworth, British open etc.
Not overly subscribed due the length of travel. Horse racing etc.
Our club has difficulties arranging things. More than likely due to people’s time constraints.

So something that gets all ages together at the club getting social. (so no buddy holly nights etc)
clubs goal is to be the best it can be for it’s ever growing membership.

I don't join a golf club to get social, I have friends and family for that already. I join a golf club to play golf. Some of my friends also play golf so we play together too and along the way of playing golf I also make new friends but with so much going on in our lives already I don't need the golf club to arrange things for me to do.

I'm with the above on this.

Just because there are 500 other people who belong to the same club as myself does not mean that I would wish to socialise with them. A Golf Club is just that; somewhere that people can gather to play golf.

If they are honest most clubs would, I fear, find that, once all costs are taken into consideration, they actually lose money on many of their social events.

My Club has a very pleasant clubhouse and a very successful bar but that success is mainly due to pre & post golf sales and the social events, whilst obviously contributing towards those sales, eat into the profits.

Our club just done a day at the races. Hired a bus and sent an email out. Full bus and everyone seemed to have a good time. They all came back and there was live music and food in the club house and they enjoyed the rest of there evening. Im sure everyone who went got to know each other a bit better.

that is my stance, just asking on behalf of the club. I won’t be attending any social events myself! Mrs would go ballistic if I spent anymore time there. She’s already alone at weekends now the season starts!

Have to agree with a few comments here. My golf friends are just that and the club is where I go to play golf. Have too many other things to do without going ti the club to socialise. Add to that the fact that few clubs I know have many in my age group and the fact that most golf clubs I know are not places my wife would like to go to and that means it is not an attractive prospect

100% with this :) golf and golf competition, ideally find a decent 2-3 who fit into your mantra! Social events, presentations it's so 1970 people have lives to get on with, making you attend a presentation 8pm on a Saturday REALLY ??

Sorry but presentations aren't social events but they are an integral part of the competition.

As I said I have no interest in attending the dreaded "functions" but if in the prizes I would make every effort to attend the presentation as a courtesy to both the organisers and my fellow competitors.

We must be the odd ones out then. Marquee up on the terrace for the Summer Ball each year, regular coach trips to a theatre matinee with supper back at the club afterwards, a Jazz evening with a meal, a Blues night with barbecue on the terrace, a Rat Pack evening, our Peruvian chef does a Peruvian themed evening plus other bits and pieces. Quite like it myself and Mrs BiM likes that she can enjoy the club socially too.

From the list of events above I would fear that those social events would not prove to be inclusive.

I can see the appeal to the over 45's but not exactly a turn-on for the more youthful members.

We have tried a lot of different functions many of which have been cancelled do to lack of support. Themed food night bands etc. The only thing that gets a lot of support is a quiz night.

Ours is probably a mix of location and cost of food (we are franchised).

Mine does the old fashioned club singer and a buffet. Not for me and the numbers are not great. They need to be more creative but I'm still not sure I'd go along. I'm with the other posters in not really looking for this from my club.

We have a match vs the Yeoman at the Tower Of London and once a tear we get a trip to see the Ceremony of the Keys with a VIP position, a guide to describe what's going on and supper in the yeoman mess room. Very popular each year and heavily over subscribed

So how close to the clubhouse do most people live?

Club's will differ greatly in their catchment and membership. For some they are golf and clubs, for others they are golf clubs.

Neither is right or wrong; issues tend to arise when they try to become what the majority of the membership aren't interested in (which is different from don't want).

Hosting a wide range of smaller events can be a good solution, but then there's the underlying question....why? If the underlying answer is to make money...
