What Does it Take to Make Womens Sport Mainstream

An old article but still relevant

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2009/mar/30/girls-school-sport-media-coverage

I still think that better media coverage (tv, newspapers etc not necessarily live coverage) would be part of the way to increase female participation in sport, although I can understand the broadcasters reluctance if the audience is initially pretty low.... Hence the chicken and egg situation.

Anyone who didn't want to watch could maybe tune into one of their 400-odd other channels for a wee while rather than simply dismissing the idea out of hand.

It will never be mainstream because theres not enough women playing sports and its been that way for donkeys.

Remember at school the lads were interested in sports but 90% of the girls were interested in the boys and short skirts :D

There never used to be that much sport on tv years ago so that is not to blame imo.

How many women actually watch sport?
I don't know many at all.
Maybe if more women supported womens football & other sports then sky would broadcast more.
Seems easy to blame men for not watching womens sports.

Golf has a handicap systems and golf courses have different Tee positions and often matches a mixed; so why not let ladies compete in Uni-Sex championships it might encourage sponsors from new business areas.

It would be good to see some of the ladies beating some of the guys - might just spark more interest.

Re the mixed events (in golf at least)....

I've always thought the WGC matchplay would be ideal for this even if, at the start, they are on 2 courses to get the games played or 1st round over 2 days?

The latter stages of the WGC are brutal watching on TV (in person too I guess) as there is so little going on so why not run a ladies event at the same time?

Not going to solve the overall picture but would give them more exposure to golf fans (in person and on the tellybox) who might not normally make the effort/have the interest to watch.

Women's tennis.....grunting on every shot.

No thanks.
