I have been playing now for about a year with a set of Ping Eye 2 irons, in there day considered a very good club. They are nearly 20 years old now, but I like them, but what benefit would a more modern set bring to my game in the real world.
I know all the adverts, heavily sponsered forums and mags would have me beleive that my old clubs are useless, out dated and holding me back and that only a new shiny set will do, but what if any real world benifit would they bring that a few lessons from a good pro would not give me?

Cheers

Chris

Yep, I have to agree with Oddsocks... It wont change your life but it may put a smile on your face. Up to you if you think thats value for money...

main benefit will be in the shafts, 20 yr old shafts wont be acting consistently, so you'll be getting one shot short and the next you'll be firing a 9 iron well over the green.

Go and try some at AG and see what suits your eye first, then consider a proper fitting

That :)

I went from Wilson Staff Di7 irons to my mizzys and to be honest (and it's probably in my head) i'm hitting them miles better than my old clubs.

Another one who agrees with the shiney argument. Did I need to change my Cobra SZ irons to Cleveland CG16? The answer is no but I got them at a bargain price, hit them slightly better and they are very shiney.

a few of the guys in our roll up use ping eye 2 ones scratch and the other two are 4 and they love those irons and won't change.

a few lessons would do.

that there is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Unless your clubs are totally wrong for you, you will gain more from 400 on lessons than 400 on new sticks, but it doesnt look as nice in the bag.

I doubt that either lessons or new clubs will make much difference. If you have been playing a year then as long as you have relatively sound basics then the way to improve is by playing a lot of golf.

Mainly in the head shiney shiney new clubs will give a bit of extra confidence that your getting all the help you can from the clubs and you'll think your playing better whether you are or not is a different matter!

have to disagree, how many people hav sound basics.....

i thought my understanding was pretty good, but last year a course of 10 lessons saw me drop from 15.something to 12., if it was a sure thing id invest in another 10 this year to get to 9.... but i know its not that easy.

I suppose it goes down to current handicap, and more importantly how repetitive your swing is,

That :)

What change did you notice with the mizzys? Which mizzys have you got? Am using the di7s currently and am finding them powerful but too high launching presently. On the subject of new clubs, I think most of the improvements made are in the head. There is only a certain amount of help new clubs can bring.

Have to agree with DV on newer shafts. Once had one replaced in an old set and the difference was amazing.

Maybe keep the heads but get fitted for new shafts.
