Just wondering what kind of course we all prefer to play, length-wise and par-wise.

My annual membership allows me to play 4x18 hole courses:- one a par 67 at 5,500 yards; one a par 70 at 6,100; one a par 71 at 5800 and the last a par 71 at 6100.
However, I find these don't allow me to "use the whole bag of clubs" most days. Not hitting many mid or long irons in to greens after the drive. Mostly wedges. Where's the fun in that?

The course I grew up on was a par 72 at over 6700 from the medal tees and I have to say I miss having to hit those longer irons and woods into greens, although I don't miss the high scores this inevitably leads to.

What's your preference?

is that parkland you are playing now John?

I suppose you grew up playing links, where you could be playing the same hole differently each day depending on the wind.

My place is just over 6100 par 70 but we have several holes where you need to hit a longish club in to the green. A couple of 450 yard par 4'w and a couple more well over 400 mean that, unless you're hitting forum distance, you need a decent length shot in.
Too many courses have too man6 350-380 yard par 4's - they have their place but too many leads to a boring game.
I'm not too fussed on actual par or length as long as there is a good mix of lengths of holes.

We are close to 6900 off the white tees, and a large mixture of holes. I don't mind a longer course, but par 72 is the preferred number. Seems fairly balanced. Shorter courses normally mean you have to think about what you are hitting, especially off the tee, so is always a different challenge

I don't really care but not a fan of long par 3 ' s. Bore the ta ta's off me.

Totally agree. Anything over 170yds is a turn off for me, 200yd par 3's should be banned. They should be anywhere between 120-160yds ideally. Par 3's are about short to mid iron play, proper target golf.

The best courses have a mix of all lengths. Too many long par 4's are as dull as too many short ones. Personally I like a course where you have to think around it rather than a blasters course but that is probably because I can not hit forum members lengths.

6300 off the yellows, 6700 of the whites and 7000 of the blues. Par 72.

I don't really care, variety of holes and a challenge is more important than just the stats of length and par imho.

Home(AVGC) is 6612 from the whites, par 72. I like it about that size and par. For example if I play with my mother or father-in-law at Batchworth Park I find its all driver/gap wedge and that gets very dull!

We're 6206 yards of the medal tees, par 70, and I find it enough of a challenge. There are 4 par fours that are over 430 yards, which is a tough enough test for most.

Driver - wedge might be boring, but a driver - 3 wood - wedge/chip is just as dull as it's a slog, IMHO.

ours is par 72 appx 6500. we have a nice range of holes spread fairly randomly. only exception is the 440, 410 and 430 par 4s are in succession 11-13th...a tough stretch

3s 150, 170, 185 and 200,
4s 320 330 340 360 380 390 410 410 430 440 and
5s 490, 495, 500 (soon to be 520ish) and 540

That sounds pretty good to me.

Both of ours are par 72 one at almost 6700y other at 6900y and 7007 off the blues.

Prefer the longer option as it requires use of every club in the bag.

Overall length and Par aren't really important. It's the variety and design of the holes which makes it interesting. I don't want to be hitting driver/hybrid into every par 4 in the same way I don't want to be hitting wedge at every par 3. I want my course to make me think off the tee and to give me options and to make me use every club in the bag.

Another vote for variety of holes rather than just distance; a couple of drivable par 4s, a few long par 4s and a good mix of par 3s.

My course is 6662 yards from the whites which sounds as though there should be a good mix but there are three par 3s of over 180 yards and the four par 5s are all over 510 yards which means that we have quite a few short par 4s with four of them being under 325 yards.

I hardly ever use anything longer than a 7 iron to get into a par 4 these days and that's a real shame. I wouldn't mind the odd 500 yard par 4 just so that I got to use my longer irons off the fairway every now and again. Par5's could be longer at ours too. 2 of the 3 are driver and a 6/7 iron. The other is not too bad and needs. Good drive and a better 2nd with a long iron

You must drive a mean ball if you need a 500yd par 4 to get your long irons out :ooo:
