what are blades

hello Ive been on another forum and they called golf clubs blades there was alot of Americans on that sit ifs a golf forum & every other answer they talk about basket ball or base ball add enough of that so i thought i would give this forum a try

I'm playing with callaway big Bertha 2008 I'm a 17 handicap whats the difference between my clubs & them blades


also are my clubs good to improve my game with,,,Ive been playing golf for 4 months & this is my first set Ive had


any advise would be grateful

blades are aimed at the better players(better strikers) or lower handicap players.

they are more difficult to hit than cavity back irons which you have,when you mishit them you don't get as much forgiveness as cavity back irons or game improvement irons.when you do strike them well they offer so much feel and are usually better for shaping the ball etc.

cavity back irons are the opposite really,easier to hit,much more forgiveness and you will get more distance than the blades.it's also easier to get the ball in the air which is a benefit for high handicap players.

i personally use the callaway x-14 irons and i find these irons to be spot on,they are easy to hit but still offer good feel and i can shape them ok so there's no worries there.

Used to have a set of Hogan Apex Tour, had MP37's for a while & currently using MP68's - best irons I've ever hit...sexy too!

I think blades are so pretty and just look 100% designed to hit a golf ball - the reality is very different I guess (having never tried them)!

Give them a go Amanda, they are not as hard to hit as folk make out. They will punish a bad one mind you

When I had my lesson last week and Paul was challenging me to hit a sand wedge over a (very) close tree I looked at his blade and my G20 and to my eye his club was most likely to get the job done. They just look so sleek and streamlined and engineered for the job...but I do like how forgiving my G20's are - like a puppy dog eager to please its errant owner

Blades are definitely easier to hit these days than when I were a lad and you could almost shave with them and they had a sweetspot the size of a single ProV dimple. However I am still too erratic to benefit from fully using these beautiful creatures to their potential.

If the OP was looking at a change then there are lots of different makes and models out there now with varying degrees of cavity which would offer a smaller head then the Cally BB's but still offer some modicum of forgiveness. You can even get a combo set where the longer irons are cavity bacs and graduate into blades for the shorter irons which would be the best of both worlds

Andy has it pretty much spot Amanda. Blades are not that difficult to hit provided you can hit out the middle often enough, they do offer good feedback and you should know where you have hit the ball on the clubface. If you can get a hold of them try them you might like it!

Blades are the holy grail for me. If you can play consistently well with blades then you know you are ontop of your game. These days alot of pro's have combo sets with only the higher clubs beinng blades but the lower clubs being cavity backed. Blades definitely look the business though. If I were you I would get a custom fitting session for your irons and see which suit you best. Keep going lad!

Inconsistent striking will lead to unsatisfactory results whatever club you use. A lot of tosh is spoken about the difficulty of hitting blades; largely, I suspect led by the club manufacturers in an attempt to convince us that their latest gimmick will turn us all into Category 1 golfers.
It is much more difficult to make such claims about blades as the changes in their design etc; are much less frequent.
Back in the early 70's when I first started playing there was no choice, blades or nothing & the overall standard of club golfers was no different to today!
