• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

What a shocking BBC sports personality of the year.

To say he did not deserve it is beyond belief, got the green jersey in the tour de france and also the no1 jersey. Anyone who says riding a bike is easy then they should have watched the sky sports news program on him a couple of weeks ago where he explained he is very small for the racing he does and cannot put nowhere near as much power into a bike that all the guys around him can. Technically he outdone Donald, he is world no1 and he won a major title on the way. I understand this is a golf forum but come on think of what all the others have done as well. Yeah Clarke coming ahead of Donald maybe was a bit wrong but BBC show the open where as I believe they dont show the events that Luke won. My missus said to me that Clarkes video was emotional that probably helped him to more votes. In my opinion I believe Alistair Cook should of won it for his performances down under was and I doubt will ever be done again.

Many Years ago......a rider by the name of Robert Millar won the king of the mountains at the tour. Not a mention that year, well he was Scottish.

I cant help thinking when you get the public to vote for something you are in danger of getting absolute rubbish. How can the average punter compare the achievements of all these differents sportsmen? They were all excellent, but if only sky viewers see the sport then how can a bbc audience (many who wont have sky) make an educated assessment? They can't. If it was voted for (as I believe it used to be), by sports reporters, then it would be much more relevant. As it is, it is de-valued and not worth watching.

The show was embarrassing at times and what was that haka thing all about with a grey haired woman gurning at the camera???

Really think Luke should have won but kind of pleased for Cav all the same. I've never really taken to him until his reaction to winning the rainbow jersey when it was all about the team and he made sure that point was made.

The part that always gets to me though is when the images of those lost in the year are played on the screen. There are always a couple of "I didn't know he/she had died" and this year Grete Waitz passing had somehow passed my by :( A tribute to Seve would have been a nice touch but perhaps not right to separate him from the others?

Did anyone on here actually vote. If not then you can't complain about Luke not doing better. Clarke and Mcilroys achievements are better anyway, Luke woudl swap his two order of merits for an Open or US Open title in a second.

I didn't watch it or vote as I knew it would be cringeworthy. I watched Made in Chelsea instead!! That Caggie one is fit!

FWIW I think Cavendish deserved to win.

I cant believe the number of votes he got - 49% is huge and no-one got near. Massive popularity for a cyclist !!!

I think he is awesome and deserves any accoldae he gets, as do all the other 10 nominated. Just think its great that we have left the times behind when several of the nominees had average years, its fantastic for british sport that we have so many at the top of the world in their sport. It will be interesting next year, Olympic Year/Ryder Cup and their is a good chance that Luke/Lee/Rory etc are at number one and have won majors. What if Andy wins Wombledon?

Jake Humphrey is really starting to irritate me as a presenter and I probably FFwd most of what he said.

Anyhow as long as Jessica Ennis turns up - all good eh?

Two things I need explaining.....

1. If so many of you expected it to be a crap, boring affair - why did you bother tuning in?

2. Why should there have been a "Seve Tribute"? Plenty of Sportspeople have left us over the last year, all in their own field as big as Seve (maybe). Did they show the faces this year? They always have done.
If they were to have a full blown tribute to all of them it would take all night.

And anyway, the Beeb has already shown a tribute to Seve - several times I should imagine.

To us, Seve was Golf
To the rest of the World, Seve was just another Golfer...

Mark Cavendish deserved the award[no doubt about it]amazing cyclist.
He in time will be the most prolific winner of stages in the Tour de France
ever.
That will be unbelievable for an Englishman.
I just think the BBC need to decide wether its sports personality or greatest
yearly performances.
If they do it on the first criteria,Rory will never win it,and it wont matter
how many majors he wins.
I havnt seen any pictures yet of him with his misses together, but after last night
they could have a part in the next episode of Beauty and the Geek.

Its turned into the sports equivelent of the Eurovision song contest. I only watched the last half hour and boy oh boy was that painful enough!

3 golfers to choose from, so that devided their vote, and most of the others apart from Cavandish not personalities - i would prefer a top sportsperson competition than a personality one

Well deserved by Cav, his achievements this year have been amazing, only what Luke did comes close. Might not be the best known in this country, but if you went to most of Europe and asked them to name two British sportsmen they'd probably say beckham and cavendish. He's the best at what he does by an absolute mile and potentially one of the greatest ever. We haven't got many in his class so he should be lauded formwhat he's achieved.

I agree that it's a pretty rubbish programme now, how much of the time is devoted to actually showing sport ?

Just wondering , is this voted on by the public ??

If so how many on here actualy voted ??

Just wondering also did the BBC not already have a tribute to seve ?

Sorry just seen Imurgs post regarding Seve , they did have one , what would a cycling fan think of a tribute to a golfer or a golfer winning ? If Luke had won the cycling forums would prob be saying that same as is on here ..
There are people that support other sports out there guys , & they obviously voted .

Dont like Linkekar, and dont like the Question of Sport lady either. I had it on, and looked up from the laptop whne they showed the golfers and the crickers.

Cavendish was the right choice for winner, as for Clarke . . . .well, im in the Donald camp on that one. 4 good rounds versus a year of top 10's and win's is worth more to me. Would Donald swap his money titles for the Open, yes, but you have to look beyond just this if the award is for sports personality of the YEAR. Would Donald swap his whole year for Clarkes whole year....probably not.

We love golf, but to non-golfers, it's not much of a draw and the general level fo knowledge is pretty thin. DC did well and mainly because he had a genuinely human story and he won a big event that was on the Beeb, so he was on the radar of the general public.

Cycling is a genuine sporting success story in the UK and so it's testament to the achievements of all the cyclists in the past two decades, as well as Cav's tremendous personal efforts. Anyone taking cheap shots at him just displays their ignorance of what it takes to reach his level of sporting excellence.

Yes, the show is a pale imitation of the old Sports Review of the Year, but is anyone surprised?

Not read all the posts..I am off to play golf (sorry guys and gals!) but I was sooooo bored with it. England cricket team winning the team of the year? Solheim Cup ladies should have won that by a country mile.

What is that because someone in golf wins something they should win the award. How you can even come close to comparing the Solheim Cup win (in 3 days) to what the England cricket team have done over the year.

Chris

The vote was split that much that Cavensidh beat the golfers combined vote by more than 2 to 1

Chris

except that Cavendish had 169,152 votes (49.47%),

and the 3 golfers polled a TOTAL between them of 77,957

Donald was 4th with
23,854 (6.98) :(
Mcilroy was 8th with
11,915

these are very good points, most of us probably thought with our hearts as opposed to the practicality of it.
