What a shocking BBC sports personality of the year.

Garbage, for a while I thought it was X-Factor or something with all the fireworks going off.

All show and no substance, I used to enjoy watching it for the sporting highs of the year, not waffle and lovey behaviour.

And what was that Haka thing? I've always thought that the Haka was a load of tosh and will never understand why it's always shown on the TV with such awe, but that version was a joke, or was it supposed to be? I missed the start of it.

I'll not be watching next year.

It has been rubbish for years and has become a parody of the version Frank Bough use to present. At least in those days there was a proper review of the main sporting action and not an incessant ad campaign to phone premium numbers and vote

Glad that Cavndish won it, more than deserved, what really amused me is how badly the golf world wanted one of theres to win it both before and after, some of the comments on various formats beyond laughable

The whole focus has changed. If I remember right, the program used to be called 'Sports Review of the Year' and was a serious appraisal of UK sport throughout the year with decent reviews and interviews. It just happened that the SPOTY got presented at the end. Then the cult of celebrity took over, there were silly games and challenges and it all became a bit naff and finally the sports review bit disappeared and it turned into sporting X Factor.

This needs to go back to its roots and head back to being an introspective on the sporting year.

The format of the show might be rubbish -has been for years and youcan blame the BBC for that. And it's never been about "personality". But you can't blame them for the result - they didn't pick the contenders, and they didn't pick the winner. And in any case Cavendish was a worthy winner - his achievement second to none. But shame that "we" didn't vote Donald into second place.

Cycling is physically demanding, as anyone thats ridden at 20mph average for over 2 hours can testify. However it's like distance running - talentless. It's down to fitness and mental strength more than natural ability.

Clarkey and Donald were done over, absolute gutted for them. Seems the BBC wanted to show how open minded they were by giving it to minority sports.

To say he did not deserve it is beyond belief, got the green jersey in the tour de france and also the no1 jersey. Anyone who says riding a bike is easy then they should have watched the sky sports news program on him a couple of weeks ago where he explained he is very small for the racing he does and cannot put nowhere near as much power into a bike that all the guys around him can. Technically he outdone Donald, he is world no1 and he won a major title on the way. I understand this is a golf forum but come on think of what all the others have done as well. Yeah Clarke coming ahead of Donald maybe was a bit wrong but BBC show the open where as I believe they dont show the events that Luke won. My missus said to me that Clarkes video was emotional that probably helped him to more votes. In my opinion I believe Alistair Cook should of won it for his performances down under was and I doubt will ever be done again.

Three observations.....
1. I can't really believe how many people will watch this when prem football (and even darts) is on Sky. Wish it was on BBC but hey ho it may end up too "dull".
2. I honestly, when the contenders were announced, didn't know who Cavendish was.
3. As for personality......Nigel Mansell once won it...... QED.

His achievments are good. As a keen cyclist I know how physically demanding it is. However, as a cycle fan some points need raising.

He doesn't go at it for all stages of the TDF. He goes into standby mode for the stages he has no chance of winning, conserving energy for the main sprint stages.

In those stages his team do 95% of the work, pushing him to a good position. He does the sprint finish which is awesome, however his team get little credit for doing the dog work. The way the BBC made it sound, was like he was going flat out for the entire race.

In the cycle world he's overshadowed by the all-rounders. If he won the TDF then fair play. Or maybe if it was an Olympic year. I just feel he's not done as much as Clarke or Donald. Cavendish will achieve more in the future, Clarkey....well this was his last chance.

Ali Cook deserves more aswell, top chap and what an average.

not been much of cyclist, i had alot of good times in the summer watching cav ride 200miles and sprint at the end of it to win a stage, well deserved i think , but on other hand did think luke shud of been runner up, but wont be grudge darren clarke a place up there

Let's face it. All 10 nominees are awesome at what they do but it's just X factor for sportsmen in a way with a public vote and all that. I much preferred the Military Heroes programme on ITV the night before. Now those guys deserve tributes!! Sportsmen get adulation from thousands of people while they go about thier business. Soldiers get squat for putting their lives on the line.

PS. Rory looked ace in his Penfold disguise....

Totally agree. Last night's prog was a pale imitation of what was once a decent programme.

And next year the politically correct will have their way, the nomination criteria are to be changed to ensure the ladies get a fair crack of the whip...
