Weymouth or Lyme Regis for new golfers

We're down in Weymouth at the weekend and both my brother and father in law want to come out for a game.

They're both new to the game, know the basic ettiquette and will be ok to get it round but obviously we want to make it as enjoyable as possible whilst playing a nice track.

I spoke to Weymouth on the phone yesterday who seem very accomodating and suggested a time when the course wont be too busy but from the photos on the website it looks quite a bit tighter than Lyme Regis.

Anyone played either and got any thoughts please? Open to suggestions of other local courses as well.

I've not played either, so can't help. However if you go east to nr Wareham Dorset golf resort (old east dorset) is worth a trip

it's not too long off the yellows. fairly open and friendly. They also have 27 holes, although the 3rd 9, the woodland is tighter

it's about 20 mins drive from Weymouth

I played Lyme Regis about 2 weeks ago, it's a nice course not particularly difficult (play off 22 & played to handicap) & was in a pretty good condition.

However, I wouldn't recommend as I found the professional fairly unhelpful & was given the feeling that it was a chore for them to have a non-member playing their course. I find this kind of attitude off putting & really sours my opinion of the course.

The only other course I've played in that area is Axecliff, it's very hilly & there are a lot of blind tee shots, but they are very friendly & accommodating.

Weymouth is nothing special, not played Lyme Regis so can't comment on it. Came Down (between Weymouth and Dorchester) is quite a decent track. As therod says, East Dorset (it's changed it's name??) is a good venue for beginners as they have 27 holes so can accomodate a bit better.

Lyme Regis is quite a nice track, good greens, not too difficult layout, fairly open and the rough isn't jungle. Couple of drivable short par 4's (last holes 9/18) make it a little weak imo. Can cop for more than its fair share of fog and I the existing 16th green is within feet of falling off the cliff!!! (although they do have a new 16th layout and green under construction) Probably worth a try if you can get it at a twilight or discounted rate.

Had already tried West Bay (Bridport) as we played there last year but they're full, I think you might be right about Lyme Regis as the guy soon put me off as soon as I said we had a couple of novices in the group, Dorset Country Club (East Dorset) did look like a good option but only had 2 slots available all day and might be a bit too busy for our group.

I think I'll speak to Came Down later and see if they're as accomodating as Weymouth seem to be.

going a bit further on the road to Poole you could try Bulbury Woods. It no Army/Broadstone etc but is an easy walk and would be novice friendly. It's probably 30 mins from Weymouth

Try Knighton Heath some 20 min from Weymouth. As opposed to Broadstone very welcoming and a nice track

need a handicap cert for Knighton Heath. I almost joined there once, didn't find them that friendly !
