I'm really struggling to play golf on a wet course. I'm new to the sport and not a great player but since all the rain the last few months the ground is saturated. I keep taking huge divots and the ball goes nowhere. So I try to grip down a little and top the ball. It's really putting me off the game right now and I'm not enjoying it. Putting is fine and so are tee shots. Please help

I feel your pain, had a very similar problem, You know that as the ground is wet, there is little or no run, therefore its all carry.
You want your ball to carry as far as possible, so subconsciously you hit it harder, which throws everything out.

You actually need to concentrate on your tempo and dont try to hit the cover off it, Dont hit it harder, hit it better

Good Luck

You're hitting it fat and this is exacerbated in the wet as it's easier for your club to just slice into the ground behind the ball. Take a read of this to get some ideas on how to cure it - http://www.golfswingsecretsrevealed.com/blog/2011/07/28/how-to-stop-hitting-a-fat-golf-shot/

carcrash.. don't loose heart. As mentioned previously, the ball doesn't travel as far so newbies tend to try and hit the ball narder, it's better to club up and take a smoother swing, you'll be amazed in the results.

if you have preferred lies why not try using a mat?

We have gone to our winter course this week and mats are now in use, lots of guys i my club use them.

worth a try while its wet?

I am struggling a bit at the moment as I seem to be catching the ball a little fat. My biggest issue is getting on the green from 100 odd yards. Usually this would be my SW however I'm getting too much ground and the ball is going about 40 yards.

Usually I'd take my 8 iron and run the ball up to the green but obviously need the ball to run which it doesn't at the moment.

I am new and thought that I too was topping the ball in these conditions. Had a lesson on Sunday and my pro said I was trying to hit the ball too hard and thus was closing my club face and de-lofting my club not topping as I thought. when I slowed it all down and throttled back I was hitting the ball well. So maybe try that

Since my swing has improved and is more on the inside path instead of out to in i seldom take deep divots

You are hitting fat because you are changing posture or moving too much out of address setup

I had a big problem last year of straightening my right leg so lifting in the backswing and then dipping in the downswing, horrible !

I worked hard on keeping my right leg in the same flex and bingo height is nearly constant

i also find if you cut across the ball you will take a deep divot especially in the wet

Do they point too much left assuming you are right handed ?

They should point a smigen left of target nothing more ideally
