Not read all the replies but had it been me, I'd have been getting a free drop, why wouldn't you. Seve always used to say, use the rules to your advantage because there are many times when they are against you.

Got to admit I'm in this camp to.

It's all well and good lauding his integrity etc but of he was entitled to a free drop and took it, imo doesn't damage his integrity either the rules are the to be used to assist and govern us if you're offered a free drop within the rules then take it.

Kudos to the ref as well with how he handled the situation, thought he was spot on.
I think he gave Lee the option but if it was me I would be thinking “ if it wasn’t in the scrape the ball may have rolled away from the bush”
It may have gone further in the bush ,so it definitely affects the lie.
I just think he should have thought more like Seve.

I thought the ref was basically telling him "you don't really have a shot do you so you shouldn't be entitled to relief" that's just how I interpreted it. I suppose he did also give Lee the way out though, I'd have loved to have seen the outcome had he said yes lol.

It wasn't a way out, it was the start of a pre determined route that would have been followed by "please show me..." if Lee had said he would have played it.

As to posts #22 & 24 - you aren't entitled to free relief if "..."

But he wasn't entitled to a free drop, if he was he undoubtedly would have taken it

Except that the only drop could be in a worse place than you already are
In this instance yes you're right but there will be other occasions where its favourable and in that circumstances a player would be silly not to take it. Just my opinion.
