Anybody played here, if so what are your views?

Can get a tee time for £9.38 per person, so wondered what I would be getting for such a low fee

Cheers

Sorry folks, should be Western Park

Played there a couple of weeks ago. A bit scruffy, decent layout, but suffers in the wet, decent value if not wet.

I used to play there regularly and for a Municipal it was an absolute gem, proabably over 100 years old and in good condition with some nice holes.
Not played there for over 20 years now though and from what I've heard I don't wish to:

Half the course was sold off for housing and new holes added to one side, not as good as the ones they replaced.
The condition of the course leaves a lot to be desired.
The biggest problem though are the housing estates alongside. The course is seen as a playground and has been used for off-road motorcycling and car driving.
Golfers can be the target of bored kids with balls and even clubs stolen as well as being pelted with stones.

Play there a couple of times a year, as previously said decent enough track, not experienced any of the trouble crow mentioned but have heard similar tales. We only play there in the week (weekends are usually too busy) my gripe with the course is that the first cut (off the fairway) is a tad too long making finding stray balls difficult, with the fallen leaves at this time of year it's a nightmare. Having said that I wouldn't put anyone off giving it a go it's certainly good value and a better golfer than I wouldn't spend as much time off the fairway.

Crow - are you sure your on about western park!! Yes there was talks about it being sold off years ago but that never happened. I had a yearly green fee ticket to western park last year. Just lately they have spent a hell of alot of time doing the place up. It looks hundred times better than its ever done. There is never any trouble up there at all. Its not the hardest of courses to play, very forgiving. Some nice holes there. Bunkers aint great, not much sand in them. They have just started playing off the winter mats though and also they have just spiked the greens. For £9 its still worth going to play. I still go up there every other week now :)

I played there in a club match a few months ago. I was fearing the worst after hearing the same tales as others but I was pleasantly surprised.

I guess it won't be as good now it's a bit wetter, but I thought the layout alone was well worth a tenner. The greens aren't great, more like nicely mown back garden lawns than a golf course green but for the price I'd give it a bash.

As I said, I've not played it for over 20 years, probably over 25, and am only going on hearsay, though some of that was from a member. I just had a look on Google satellite view and while I can't remember many holes it didn't look to have changed that much.

Is the 17th still a left to right dogleg with the green below you for your second shot? This used to be my favourite shot on the course (at least when I could hit a decent tee shot, I was more often in the trees right).

If it's getting some investment that's great, I really used to enjoy playing there.

I might try this in a fortnight, with the weather not being so good I just went to my course and played within my handicap again. Also found out my cut for winning at the weekend was 3.6 so now off 24.0 actual

the 17th is now a par 3, nice hole imo.. Sorry i didn't realize you hadn't played there in past 20 years lol!!

Its not a bad course in all fairness, just lately alot of good things have been said about the course.

Also Humberstone Heights is worth looking at, thats the 2nd municipal course in leicester. Its a bit more challenging than western park!

I was a member at Humberstone when I was a junior, over 25 years ago!

I keep saying I'm going to play it at some stage but never get round to it. If anyone fancies a game there I could be persuaded. It would be like going back to my old school. :)

i would prefer a friday, about 10ish. Working nights I get home about 845am, so allowing for travel about 10 seems early enough. To get the cheap tee times we/I would have to book and pay in advance, or just take our chance book a time and pay on the day
