But to me the last bit above sums the whole problem up.
Its not a new course. It is one of Surrey's finest and it has been turned from that into something that could be anywhere in the world.
I love Ernie Ells but he has been asked to do somthing here that is wrong for the location of the course. And its not just that hole either. He has changed the entire feel of the course.

Before they changed it most people were spanking drivers down there with a bit of fade. why wouldnt one of the best drivers in the game go for the driver ? Have they moved the cross lake nearer ? I was surprised WW didnt hit driver cos hes a great driver of the ball and it would have easily got him in range with an iron.

I think abit more room between ditch & green would be good on 18.
But for me the 17th was annoying. I thought it was daft making it such that once a ball hits the green it runs straight down off the back, I'd prefer a green that slopes back to front.
I'm also not a fan of the big, American style, run-off on the right. Maybe a bunker on the right would have been more interesting.

Wentworth is a traditional Harry Colt course, opened in the 20's. It was very natural, being cut through large pine, oak and silver birch trees. There is plenty of heather to create a traditional heathland course. I have been luck enough to play the old West course a few times, and it has always been a delight.
Unfortunately in my opinion the changes that have been made, are not in keeping with its traditions. Some holes have be changed into American style ones, with excessive bunkering and run off areas. The 17th is the worst example, with not only a run off area to the right, the way the land slopes, but also to the left, into the natural slope of the land. If any hole needed to be left alone this is it.
The 12th is also now a poorer hole, as the green is set up for a wedge, but now that it is a par 4, it requires a long iron for the pro's. Mind you for me it would be drive, three wood, and then at least a wedge.
The 18th is again just not in keeping with the course, with an American style water feature. If the hole was lost in the middle of the course it would probably not cause so much debate, but as a finishing hole it just doesn't look right, and seems to encourage players at the top of the leaderboard to play safe. It is much easier to go for the green in two when you are 10 shots off the lead fighting for 35th place.
From my understanding a lot of pros, including Ian Poulter did not want to play the course in the past, not because of its design, but because the greens were slow and not up to standard for such a big championship, such as the PGA. The greens were all dug up and re turfed, and now look and roll superbly. I think it was a shame that the course was not then left alone , with just a few subtle tweaks.

Haven't they added bunkers on both sides of the fairway to tighten up the drive?
Same as with the green, I think they have gone too far down the idea of making it tough.
It just discourages players from taking on the risk.

Thank goodness. I think Lee is a terrific player and well deserving of his place whether no.1 or no.2
My frustration with the hole is to see him "do it right" and then pay a hefty penalty for being 1 yard too left with his pitch. Either way, on the occasion, Luke was deserving. How he held it together with such an "off" long game was great. I slated him last year for blowing it, he didn't make the same mistake this time, although his 2nd shot to the 17th must have got his memory awakened.

how about the opposite view, make the layup more chancy, a depth of cabbage before the water, or some proper bunkers, smaller safe zone. as it is the 2nd from a layup is a pretty well nailed on shot.
